Re: found this button and don't have a clue

I don't know much about buttons but I am trying to learn. Since it is a 1 piece button does that automatically make it a cuff button? And if so would that account for a difference in the same design on a 2 piece button?

No--one piece buttons have only one piece of metal.  Two piece buttons have two pieces of metal.  Cuff buttons are small, Coat buttons are larger. They may be referring to the shank being brazed on, but it's still a one-piece button in my book.

I think this one's solved BTW.  Nice ID, savant!

We knew about the Louisiana/pelican connection, that is why I asked her if she was from Louisiana back in re #10.
You mean that you posted those sites just because you heard they had Pelican buttons? Man you are lucky. Do you have any lottery numbers for me? :D :D ;D ;D

Nice work NGE and Savant. Im tired of searching. Im going outside.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Thanks so much savant and NGE. And everyone else also. All of you are just super. You make one heck of group of smart detectives. I hope I can return the favor one day by helping someone else as you have helped me. Like a pass it on thing. If you ever have any advice for me on detecting I will welcome it. As I said I'm a rookie that is eager to learn. May your days be filled with much happiness and your nights filled with dreams come true. At least some of them coming true anyway. Thanks again everyone.... from the tornadolady....  :coffee2:

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

I was wondering myself what is the historical significance, if any, of a War of 1812 Louisiana Artillerists button in South Carolina.

What else did you find there?

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

I found nothing else of any importance. Other things found were buttons (none like mine). the other buttons had nothing on the front. and there was a buckle found. I think mostly from the same era. I heard someone say they thought it had been a plantation once.

 ....tornadolady....

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

hi bigcypresshunter, Yes at least one or two had writing on back, but they were just the backs, did not have the front of the button to match. I don't remember what they said.
someone else had them, so I don't have access to them now.
we were in a field, and I was near the road when I found my button. the buckle that was found was not far from my button. but don't know what kind of buckle either, or access to it.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

With the other buttons it sounds like you have a good early 1800's site worth searching some more. It doesnt sound like an isolated find.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

yes I believe this site is very worth going back and searching some more. I hope my friend remembers where it is and can get us there again. When I hold that button , it kinda gives me a funny feeling. Just thinking that I am holding something that someone else had almost 200 years ago.I'm sure he led a hard life, most everyone did then. But I wish I could for just a moment get a vision of what life was like back then. And what was this guy like that wore this button. Can anyone undersstand what I mean? That is why I want to know more about this button ( it's history) if possible..............tornadowoman.....

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

flat plain faced --with and without back mark buttons are commonly called "flat buttons" and were heavily used in the early to mid 1800's-- the louisana state artillery button is a great find. by the way.

Tornadolady, when I first saw your screen name and someone asked where you were from, I thought you were going to answer; Kansas. ;D Are you a survivor of a tornado, do you attract them, or are you a stormchaser? ???........NGE
