Most definitely an eagle...hundreds of eagle examples can be found and no pelican examples...
OK I see it now. The upper beak is very thick. Try this pic is clearer.

I went back and looked at NGE's link and Savants pic and sure enough, they call it an eagle. Somehow I missed that. :icon_scratch:

I say mystery solved tornadolady. SC militia Artillery Corps button. This button has nothing to do with Louisiana or pelicans lol and Im sorry I led you down the wrong path. I did say in my first post that I didnt know much about these buttons. :)

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

the state of louisana had some "pelican" buttons however they are quite rare.(note in warren tice's book - uniform buttons of the united states 1776 - 1865 -- its listed as no. LA245A1 (confederate civil war)-- however this clearly isn't one of em.

as stated --sc artty button --war of 1812 ish time frame maybe.( note I said maybe)

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Charlie, you sure do have a good idea about taking your metal detector with you fishing. I will definitely
have to do that from now on. Thanks so much for the tip. And with the price of fishing supplies thats not a bad thing replacing your supply free....lol..... :D
Sure could use some more great tips, if your willing to share them. Have a good one.....

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Bigcypresshunter, Don't think another thing about it. Ya know, Daddy always said sometimes when you are taken down a different or wrong path (so to speak) you learn a lot more than if you took the easy, direct,
( or right) path, as long as you end up in the right place. It can be more interesting and fun also.

So bigcy I consider myself a little more educated on buttons . I had a lot of fun with this post.
And I met a lot of very nice people along the way, that I would be honored to call my new friends.

Ivan Salis At least I don't have to try and figure out what a louisiana button was doing up in South Carolina.

It's been a great ride during this post. I appreciate everything. Thanks.......

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Sorry about leading ya down the wrong path tornadolady, I still see a pelican annnnnnnd, now I see an eagle with a lonnnnnnng neck lookin' backwards. This looks like one of those optical illusions, be very careful when blinking an eye, it WILL turn into a pelican. And this is the second time I led a young lady down the wrong path, the first is my wife of 30 1/2 years ;D. I never claimed to know much about buttons, but was eager to try and help, I should've sat back and watched the pro's in action...........NGE

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

I agree its looks like a pelican ( thus leading folks towards civil war louisana * )-- until after you a bit of research then you "know" its a rather odd looking south carolina artillery "eagle" button of the 1812 ish time frame -- and yes the "trip" is often more fun than the arriving is. --oh by the way --great find !!! Sure it's not a Gecko? Just kidding of course. I think it's a great find and I'd be proud if I'd found it myself.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

I've seen similar 1812 artillery regiment buttons but I think the pelican would logically point to it belonging to a coastal or maybe even marine artillery regiment. Just a guess but the Pelican is certainly the strongest clue IMHO.

VERY awesome find!

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Hi david, Yea I'm not positive about a lot. But I am sure You can't dwell on or change the past. But you must never forget it. You cannot be sure of the future, there's no promise of it anyway. And one more. I'm sure we need to live for today. But be careful not to step on others toes, at least not too often. Because the odds are , one of these times you take your foot off his toes, you'll have to make a painful trip to the hospital to remove his foot. ;D ;D ;D
thanks for posting.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Hi nge , Nice to hear from you today. No apology called for . Shoot, I can be using a gps and still go down the wrong path. ;D.
As for sitting back, don't you dare. Speaking your opinion is what this forum is for (discussions, learning and help). So you or anyone please voice their opinion anytime on one of my posts.
And finally, but not least. You must not have led your wife down the wrong path. She must be happy with the path or she would not still be heading down that same path. Congratulations to both of you, and best wishes for the next 30 1/2. Tell her I said hi.
