I have actually seen these magical Pignuts. (Great name!!) I have lived overseas twice while becoming the first American to hold season tickets to my one true love, Arsenal Football Club. I am kidding about the first American season ticket holder but... Hhmmm, I do not remember another Yank. I have also hit the soccer World Cup in 1986 when my Dad took me to Mexico for a few matches, missed 1990, caught 1994 in the US, 98 in France, missed 2002 Japan/Korea, and caught 2006 Germany.
I have a soccer jersey collection that has 350+ jerseys. I also caught the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. I would never, ever think that what I saw and held had diddly squat to do with either the WC or the Olympics in an official capacity. They try and sell just about everything not chained down, too.
After carefully pondering these darn things I have a completely outlandish guess.
Korea did very well in the 2002 World Cup. Possibly an industrial plant employee made them for the type of game described from bits and pieces of some similar designs. Basketball is not popular in Korea and they are distinctly made with a basketball motif. Koreans were very proud of their finish which could have provided the impetus for their creation. I can assure you that through years and years of collecting sports related items they were not intended to be made for any kind of large scale distribution.
SO... I have it narrowed down to a rogue industrial plant employee in Korea who came to the US, found a strange looking pitch, and left them there before returning home to Asia.
Or most likely, they were prototypes. That is the ONLY logical half thought I could conjure and I am rarely stumped in matters of the heart, otherwise known as soccer. They are quite a sight, though!!
The mystery, much like the song, remains the same. No new tale to tell. I will gladly add $50 to the pot if anyone can successfully ID these things!!
