First Foray into Processing Crushed Rock

Assembler, I was following southfork's suggestion of not throwing away all the rocks I toted home. Instead, break mthe rocks I have at home, and examine the pieces through a loupe. That's what I was referring to in my previous post, not gathering new stuff.
Well that is so far not getting you some colors. I say use the pan to find some color out in the field first then break some of the near by rocks with the use of the loupe to guide you. If you can't see it why break much rock hoping to see it.

Some times the colors will have not traveled very far from the source.

Be really careful with the wink…It is still pretty nasty stuff…https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofluoric_acid

Thanks, I plan o n moving from my kitchen to my new ShelterLogic 8x8x8 tent sometime next month. I'll have a bench in there, as well as shelves for things, and best of all, power, so I can run a hot plate it I need to roast or dry things out, as well as run a tornado type fan for ventilation.

That's also the reason I'm digging s place I can dump my dirty water. I plan on having a small sink, with a drain the runs to that water sump.

I just want my kitchen back for what it is supposed to be for, eating and cooking. :-)

I think I have read somewhere that a dime size exposure to this stuff can kill you…you should have a good chemical apron and chemical gloves with eye protection at the least…

So this is not a good idea to mix with any food.

?????? The reason southfork wanted me not to throw away the rocks I already have at home is they may, even if it's only a couple of them, have some gold in them. I agree with him. I don't plan on going out into the field for another few days, as the rain forecast is persistent. Here in the desert, it usually doesn't sprinkle, when it rains, it's usually the flash flood type of rain, and I will not chance being trapped for days.

I find it hard to believe my family does not believe much of what I tell them…My daughter went out and spent $140 on some pay dirt for me as a present…I won’t even mention some of the ores I have come across in my adventures…lol…But the pay dirt is from Montana…

Oh well…One day I just may prove to them I am not as crazy as they believe…Hell…I will even take Jeff Bezos to Santa Fe IF he antes up…

Yeah…It’s A new year and I have had a few beers…lol

Why not take a trip out there.

Where you last have been finding minerals / gems.
Maybe one day…lol…I doubt I’d want to take my daughter to a chicken ranch…lol

Where you last have been finding minerals / gems.
I tried to talk my children into taking clases at GIA…Mainly in graduate of diamonds at the Carlsbad campus…They pretty much looked at me and laughed…

Oh well…

Why would anyone mix wink into their food?! The amount of HF in wink is minute. I used the stuff at work in the glass industry and it’s dangerous stuff but the dime size exposure you are talking about results from a much more concentrated form than wink.

I think there talking about 30 percent and higher not the home cleaning product at 1-2 percent. But still use protection if this stuff dissolves quartz / silicates you don't want it on your skin. Note it comes in a plastic bottle at the higher strength it might eat glass. And there is a lot of other chemicals in Whink. Happy new year

Happy New Year. I thought Whink would use only about 1-2 percent by volume. I read this HF Acid was the strongest. I believe this and the Muriatic acid is fine for where I a m in the hard rock processing game. I don't want stronger stuff until I learn to use these.

I was right. It rained some last night. Don't know how things look out in gold mining country, but will find out whenever I feel it's safe. And dry panning I think is out for a while. I'll have to rely on my eyes, and what little I know about gold indicators. Anyone have a good video on gold indicators for dummies I can entertain myself on a rainy New Years day?

Not a good idea getting any of the above near food. Use a different area for sure.

Also, any containers or utensils you use, are forever banned from use with cooking or food. I'm not a dummy when it comes to common sense and safety. I served 24 years in the Air Force, and part of my job as a supervisor/manager was safety. The big wigs sort of frowned on accidents preventable. Bad enough ones usually got those in charge fired.

I am sure the Wink is not as lethal as the full strength acid…I met a guy named Aldo I believe many years ago from Santa Rosa I believe…He had spent over $50,000 attending classes at Mackay…He offered to give me some of said acid and I politely declined his offer…

I used it at work in a 10% solution that would dissolve borosilicate and quartz. I have colleagues that have received HF burns it’s not something to take lightly it is extremely dangerous and if manipulated wrong it will kill you in a most painful way.

The idea that kitchen implements and HF are being used together is terrifying. If you don’t have a laboratory setup you should run screaming away from HF.
