Did yall know its illegal?

Just because people say they don't know a law, does not mean they will not arrest you for breaking a law. So be very careful of what you do. We don't want to hear how someone was arrested for doing what they thought was right. Doing what some people think is right is not always right.

Wait a minute! I have a pair of vultures that live in my barn and rise one young vulture each year. According to this, they belong to the US government. Now I am wondering, shouldn't Uncle Sam be paying me rent? Frank...
No that's a Raven, no vultures on the thumb drive.<img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=957122"/>

Or if they damage you're property? Don't want to kill them that's 1st degree bird murder! Loud fire works say a homemade firecracker would scare them away :)

An ill eagle is a sick bird. Nothin else around here is illegal unless they catch ya.

I think you did the right thing,
and if it lived I would've been it's friend!

Why yes they should be paying room & board. But would they up our taxes? Oh & if they are in your barn, does that mean you have in your possession a bird of prey? Oh my, tis a slippery slope to criminal behavior. I bet they are messy? I just have peewees & they are little but very messy.

Well I have to admit, They do clean up the place and the roads around here. Kind of the dirty job crew. lol Frank...

No birds of pray, more birds of patience. They just sit there and wait for it to die. I think they clean up more mess than they make. Frank...

You did the right thing Ma. Just sometimes the right thing can get ya arrested. We used to kill every hawk we could on the farm. Now we have no quail or cottontails.

This is one where I'm conflicted.
Whenever you accept a new law, you must accept the consequences of that law. The 'consequences' are prosecutions, fines and imprisonment. The United States has become the most over-regulated country on earth, we have more people in prison than any where else and a large part of what drives it all is our hysterical desire to 'regulate' everything which in turn results in the passage of laws, which in turn results in the hiring of law enforcement officers, who in turn arrest and convict people for violating whatever statute they're responsible for enforcing. Its a pretty brutal process that results in some morally appalling prosecutions, particularly regulatory ones in Federal courts.

With that said, the only way for a regulation to be taken seriously is if its enforced. Situations like someone taking an injured hawk to a bird sanctuary and being bullied about 'breaking the law' are pretty obnoxious, however as others pointed out, these laws about possessing birds of prey exist because without them, people would be killing them to sell their parts to superstitious kooks who believe feathers, claws, etc represent magical fetish objects.

All in all, a reasonable situation. You unwittingly broke a regulation, nothing came of it. If you were prosecuted, that would be pretty stupid... and such prosecutions over regulatory trivialities DO happen. Google Abbie Schoenwetter.

Here's your state laws, by the way.

Just need to encourage the local coyotes to come around the Goose nesting areas. I hear the Army did it back east when endangered Voltures were on a target range brought in coyotes -coyotes ate Voltures not a problem as its natural. Whereas shooting them would a been a very bad crime.

There are over 33,000,000 laws on the books in this Nation, could come to a point of jail time for............... GOD Bless Chris

Nope, the point is they are afraid if they allow people to pick up feathers, Someone will kill an Eagle, pluck the Feathers to sell & say they found them :BangHead:

when it comes to where the feathers came from,
nobody is innocent until proven Guilty

The sad part, is their fear is most likely right on the money. People WILL do this, as history has proven over and over and over again. When you create an opportunity, there are plenty of people who will take it. It's sad but we have only ourselves to blame. Without the conservation people out there, there would be little if any wildlife left in the world. I mean we kill each other for a few bucks, why WOULDN'T we kill a bird? lol.

A hawk got trapped in the ceiling of a giant warehouse at work. It was not hurt, just couldn't figure out how to fly out. Our maintenance people where instructed by the local raptor rescue just to let it starve to death and fall to the ground.

Luckily our maintenance guy was smarter than that and came up with a good plan. After production ceased for the day he turned off all interior building lights and left every garage door open on the building. After a few days the hawk flew to the open garage door and off to freedom.

Some of the local "wildlife experts" that I have met are complete idiots.
