I don't think I fully grasp your post Crispin, It could be you are agreeing with me.
In our current tax stratification scheme there are carveouts and "loopholes" throughout. There are teams of accountants who do not even agree on the amounts you owe, much less the application of mountains of paperwork for your individual tax returns.
Yes, you may feel like a flat rate would benefit you. And it probably would. But the real reason we need such a tax is that as soon as 51 % of the country has no tax liability at all his country is over, and you will see real stratification, which could include 90% for those that aren't rich enough to buy their own place in the power structure. Everyone needs to pay. And I don't mean just sales tax.

The very rich are not stupid, you are right, and they can afford teams of accountants and lawyers. And if you are Warren Buffet you can even afford not to pay taxes and get away with it.
If you think I am stuck in a party line you need to take a look at any of my posts again. I may be most vocal about the scandals in the Soc. party but I have a real problem with the progressives of the Rep. party.
Dave,
In general our sociological ideologies have as much in common as The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria. Sure, they were all traveling towards the New World and the last true hope of freedom. Were they really free, truly free?
Loopholes and carve outs are courtesy of vote grabbing politicians who succumb to pressure of PACs. These things exist only to put money in the pockets of the politicians, from both sides of the aisle, that we all hold dear. Do not throw the baby out with the bath water. Keep tax stratification and eliminate the loopholes and carve outs. I haven't seen Rand Paul lobbying too much for that...wonder why.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. None of us are truly free, we like to think of rights as god-given rights; but truly, they are rights allotted us by our fellow man. The right to take up arms and die in a hail of bullets is just that...the right to die in a hail of bullets.
