Nah. Those work by compressing the spring down so the two pieces can hinge and then clamp on the nose when released. Mintberry's item is one piece with no hinge.

Not so much that, but it would need a hole at the 'leading end' (for the rope) or it would not function at all.

I was thinking like a hog ring for pigs. But I'm stumped as ever.

I was thinking like a hog ring for pigs. But design seems native American so I'm stumped as ever.

Could the hole be clogged with dirt? Could it be some kind of childrens toy, crude imitation, art piece or Indian version or ceremonial bullnose lol? It sure seems to have similarities and it kinda seems to be trying to imitate the look of a spring..

It does look like the end is broken.

I've looked at it very closely it's not broken. And non of the experts think it's broken based on the pictures I've sent them the same ones I've posted here. When I look under my loop the ends are actually rounded inwards from whatever it was used for

It's old, probably late archaic, early to middle woodland period. Those rings and the spiral in the center definite Native American iconography of those periods, do some library work, online stuff regarding Fort Ancient, Adena, or Hopewell burial artifacts (Adena Man, and the Mica cutouts are awesome). Hand forged, mos def. Usage? More than likely it was an artistic expression on some part or for religious/ceremonial reasons that have been lost to time. Put in a place of honor.

It looks to be looks cast. I don't believe it is pre-Columbian (or pre-Norse).
