Coinstar Finds

July 15

- 1 clad cent

A manager came up to me today and told me that Coinstar picks the coins up from the floor (which isn't true) and said that if you find coins on the ground in the store I have to give them to her. I just left and let her take the $1 if she wants and maybe use it to buy some paint for the lines in the parking lot or to turn on some more lights in the store .

Bahahahahahahahahaha that is the funniest thing I've heard! How do they belong to coin star? I would have said "no, these coins aren't coinstar's. If they are on the ground they are noone's." That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard of!

That's what I said, but they said "they don't belong to you either." People were beginning to look at me, and I decided not to press it for a dollar or so in clad (I did not see any silver). The store is going to close in a month anyway.

Lol, wise choice probably, but I would have argued and not let them taken advantage of me. It's not like they are going to ban you from the store. But honestly I would have started rolling on the floor laughing right there in the store, or put the $1 of clad in my pocket and ran for it! Maybe they would have called the cops on you for "stealing" $1 in clad. :P

I would have pocketed the $1 if I had it. I did pocket a cent that I pulled out before I was stopped. I knew there was about a dollar since I saw what was under the machine.

This is the second time that I had an issue with Coinstars. One store that I found a silver dime at told me that "I will damage the machine."If I cut the cable, I could get electrocuted, so I know not to damage it.

I feel this would be the mentality of that store:

I would have had a nice argument with the manager probrably leading to me having to leave the store... It's not the dollar that I want, but the point that I would try to get across. I've lost hundreds of dollars in shortages using coin machines over the years, I just suck it up and move on. I am not greedy but for the manager to approach you like that, that's low.

She seemed like the kind of person who would call in security or the police right after I said something. I just preferred to avoid that. It was a low-income area next to where I volunteer, so they might have some security close by due to the MS-13 presence in the area.

I guess you did the mature thing and just gave her the change. Next time you're in there, buy something small for around $5 and pay in pennies and see what the manager does :)

I volunteer as well! Out of curiosity what cause do you volunteer for? I do the American Red Cross soup kitchen in Akron, Ohio.

It isn't a volunteer job with the low-income people, it is a volunteer job at the local library to help out the librarians.

I actually would not do that. I knew there was about a dollar under the machine left that I did not retrieve. I did keep 1 cent that she did not notice. This is the same store I had no problems at last Monday. I am just planning to boycott that particular store from now on.

July 17

- 36 cents of clad
- 1943-D steel cent
- 1946 dime
- 1989 Canada 1 cent
- 2007 Spain 5 euro cent
- 2x 2004 Thailand 1 baht
- 1991 UK 5 pence

It is:

my 13th silver dime from a Coinstar
my 15th piece of silver from a Coinstar
my 4th silver coin from a Coinstar in 2013

For coinstar in our area I was told that the coinstar folks take the coins. Not true, I think the drivers keep them. I just get after the kids who sticks their hands under the machine. There is a lot of broken glass and other things under the machine and just for the safety factor I get after the munchkins. if they reach into the reject thing, I let them. I have heard silver but people are getting wiser and keeping the rejects. Bummer.

How does this work? do you guys just look around the machine and see what you find?

I look in the reject tray first, then I look in the holes at the top, after that I look under and around, and possibly take the coins from the internal reject tray (behind the plastic).
