With only one pocket discovered so far working by hand and electric tools may be the way to proceed. After finding more pockets have your friend or someone else come in to open up more rock as needed. Maybe rent some equipment to help move the rock for processing at that point?

Definitely. A lot of steps to even get to that point. A shaker table and proper crusher alone on the low end will be 12-15k to get set up to process enough to make it worthwhile. Provided there's even any left.

Well unless there is a line of the outcrop one can guess that there is perhaps a pocket there just looking at a photo. No one has said anything yet. Just a guess at this point.

Well keep the costs down as overspending will kill the thrill fairly quick.
A highbanker for processing new or used is more in line with a hobby level.

It's not the magazine or the explosive type that's the issue. It's the storage requirements. I do not have property. I could store a Type IV with HE in nearly similar environments. But unfortunately I have found no one that will let me put a magazine on their property whether it be an indoor magazine in a shed, or and outdoor offset from any residence.

Trust me I've been down this road. I even paid for an explosive experts legal consulting. I've been dying to play with energetics but until I own a ranch it's not happening. Even if I did, insurance and bonding to get the fire marshalls approval is a nightmare.


I'll figure it out when the time comes. Getting a little too far ahead. Hopefully there's even decent grade ore back in there somewhere.

It’s not an explosive and you can literally have it shipped as a hazardous substance similar to gunpowder from Cabelas. It’s very easy and safe to transport and I’m sure it could be stored behind a locked door inside your tunnel. No need for a ranch.

I’d look into it, but I’ll not say anymore about it. It burns like a flare…no detonation and no explosives. Just a burning flare that when the gasses are contained happens to break rock when they escape. Simply needs to be contained. Unconfined it is apparently harmless as far as blasting goes. But I’ll trust you have exhausted your resources.

We all know sweat equity and sampling will be required..but eventually breaking hard rocks is going to be the primary requirement of a hard rock mine. Just to get an idea of what’s back there.

I can make black powder better than most on the shelf for dirt cheap. Maybe I should really go back in time, cutting fresh timbers and using BP to blast hahaha.

For hand tools, what should I be looking at? The best hammer drill I can get? I bought a Ryobi one and it's going back. Took me an hour to butcher that one little pocket.

When confined in a steel pipe, black powder can explode at speeds ranging from 560 feet per second for coarse granulations to 2,070 feet per second for finer granulations.

The burning velocity of black powder depends on its composition and density. For example, slightly pressed powder in a Bickford fuse burns at about 10 mm/sec, gunpowder at 8 mm/sec, and tubular powder at 3 mm/sec.

The burning rate of black powder depends on pressure, similar to solid propellant burning law.

You might search for how many permitted legal underground mines are located in your part of the state on public land..how many are permitted to process ore in any fashion on public land. Holding a claim on public ground is very different than actually mining it with an official blessing. The results will boggle your mind. It’s likely very few other than large operations.

All you can do right now is research.

ATF has online instructions for people to “build” a wooden class 2 magazine. It looks extremely easy and I’m not really sure it’s required for that product.

Think of impact force so a larger electric jack hammer will work better if you can hold it on the rock surface.

Gas pressure force will work much faster within the rock of course.
