I’m not sure if anyone has kept track of my cannon search but I’m hoping i have enough pieces to Figure it out now. It has a 2in bore .I’m going to do my best to respond promptly to any questions. Thanks

I think it is a combat loss of some kind. Otherwise the carriage and other important bits would have been salvaged. Guns lost to the enemy in combat would have been spiked most likely rather than exploded. I'm thinking the explosion was unintentional. Given the low quality of the iron, I'd say it was made in the colonies rather than shipped in.

this is a great mystery, great thread, where can the OP take pieces of this for further ID?

Well short of local museum / archaeologists / universities... this forum.

But remember... patience is required many times with them... as well as here.

So... this is... what it is.

I am still waiting for Joes cleaned new pics.

IF that is on the agenda...

if not then Joe let me know and I will "stand down".

I’ll have it clean thi weekend I didn’t see any markings on the barrel as of yet.

i have done some stupid stuff in my long and eventful, often foolish life... and I can tell you with certainty that if I was to fool around with a garden canon that weighed a few hundred pounds, I wouldn't have dragged it to some remote spot in the woods on top of a hill. I would have accidently blown that sucker up in my back yard MUCH closer to my beer. Hell, I set my kitchen on fire once making hydrogen balloons and lighting them up...(wife never found out, she was out shopping and I was watching the five year old).

Could there be more to Joe's life than treasurenet, and appeasing its hostess?

No...There is nothing more to life than TreasureNet.

You of all should be aware of that :P

these next three photos are of the same barrel piece,my longest one.the first is mid gun just down from the trunnions its 2 in thick ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609120605.870879.webpthis is the beginning of the end of the barrel (this is also the thinnest the iron gets on the gun)it’s an inch and5/8ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609120890.520288.webpthis is one notch up on what I guess would be the flare it’s an inch and 1/2ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121018.796664.webpthis is the last step up the flare at the end of the barrel it’s an inch and3/4 ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121157.420523.webpthis shows how it steps up in thickness at the end it seems fairly precise.
A few other notes of curiosity ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121318.996014.webpmaybe black then painted white?ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121404.501182.webpthis is the piece of barrel that was straight down in the ground ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121535.627197.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121567.810512.webpsee how the sand seems fused to it all my other pieces cleaned right off this sand is on there.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1609121688.886351.webpand lastly for tonight a peak down the barrel.
I’m working out of cell reception tomorrow any questions I’ll try to respond after work.

I think those pictures of it coming out of the ground help to date it. Unless it's in a flood plain, or was plowed under (and as i recall, you found them on a wooded hillside, eliminating those two possibilities), that Cannon has been there a 100+ years judging by the depth. That eliminates it being some modern decorative cannon. Cool find and the mystery behind it is quite intriguing.

Not being knowledgeable in the least on this subject...consider this chit chat.

Is there any chance that a cannon could be purposively constructed to be a shrapnel bomb under normal charging?
This is a type of tactic (sabotage of weapons and ammo) that has been used in many conflicts.

My experience with a cannon....An acquaintance of my brother had a short bronze signal cannon...(not sure of the size, but he used car shocks as projectiles). During a New Years party once, he dumped what looked like a full beer can of black powder in it and lit it off. Plugging your ears did nothing, it rocked your insides. The report woke a friend of mine up that lived across town 4-1/2 miles away! Having been around explosives as a teenager, this was the loudest explosion I have ever heard. I bet that shock traveled for miles. Really made me want to acquire a similar cannon.

Close ups of the end of barrel... ends... "flares" as you said ... rings... any other small marks... and I meant to ask of you have found any marking at all yet... and also the vent hole (fuse hole)... this may in the missing pieces ... OR when pieces are connected it becomes possibly visible then.

I know I keep asking for photos... oh and the pics you took with other camera seemed to carry more depth and slightly clearer to me... or so it seemed.

I'm certainly no expert but if you Google up a Revolutionary War three-pounder "grasshopper" I think you're in te ballpark. I don't know if iron was used. But the three-pounder is about the right size and bore. :dontknow:
