I found this coin while metal detecting when I was a kid. I thought it was fake until I brought it to a coin show and a dealer said it was not necessarily fake. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it?

Everyone has a view on this & this is mine. I spend many hours on ebay spotting fakes/copies like this one. It does scream out copy. I have 100% ebay record with over 1200 sales, I have only been caught out once, returned it & got my money back. However, even the EXPERTS, I took it to, were 50% sure it was. Enough doubt for me to return it.
You don't need to be an expert, you just need experience.

I will put my money where my mouth is, & if this is authenticated as ancient by a well known establishment (with certificate) then I will paypal the owner $1000. (not some professors inkjet paper)

Don't forget many of us have more experience than the establishment put together! (& I respect & work with these people)

That's as far as this one needed to go.... it's just that obvious. Since my first post I've only stuck around for the fun, not thinking there would be any great revelation.

PS... For the record... the horsey pic is still there for any future poster that wants me to rededicate it.

Silver Searcher, you are not being blocked in any way, shape or form, I enjoy correcting you. ;D Last night it was very late, well early, and you had just replied about the grey spot on the coin. Not being a 100% with it I thought you were talking about the yellow discoloration, and is what I replied to. Reading your post again and seeing it wasn't correct I deleted it and went to bed. Maybe that is what you had tried to quote but couldn't.

Re: Ancient coin ?

Well said Cru. And he is not even a "close minded American," Dano. Its not a coincidence that those with the experience here at TN are calling it a copy. Those with less experience like to dream, I guess. Believe me, I wish it was real.

The experience that Im talking about is the ability to recognize something with only a picture to go on. I also have been buying, selling and collecting antiquities for a long time. The education I received here at TN the past few years, from members like PBK, Montana Jim, Plebah and others too many to name, has been invaluable.

I hope you will stick around Dano. After a few years online here, you will know what I mean. TN is an incredible place. And it may not seem like it, from this sometimes heated debate, but we are freindly.

You just can't resist IP can you, you haven't corrected me yet(not rightly anyway) the Olive Branch was obviously a mistake on my behalf, so be it, if this is the way you want it, but I won't be going anywere. And I mentioned nothing about a grey spot.

History hunter could you tell us more about where you found this and how deep it was?

Did you clean it? Was the brass ring on it when you found it?

This coin may be able to shoot the professors (Gloria Farley & Mark McMenamin) theories all to hell. It is what it is. For that it could be a banner find. Please stay in touch.

It was so long ago, I can't remember the details of finding it. The ring was on the coin and if I did clean it ,it was with a tooth brush and water, like I cleaned most of my finds for years.

Re: Ancient coin ?

Your childhood find has caused quite a stir. I have to admit the uprooted palm is intriguing. I am looking forward to hearing from the professor.

To me it is still a mystery as to who made these tokens and why the palm is depicted as uprooted. It is not solved until we find the source or the manufacturer.

As we've all said, send it to the experts and let them judge.Simple.Yes they get things wrong, but then it's upto the guy (HH?) to decide who's right and wrong, and not someone just sat at a computer spouting.."it's fake! i've decided!"
Know what i mean?
OK I know what you are saying but we can solve this right here at TN. We do it all the time. All we need is to find another match and the source or manufacturer. This may turn out to be a rare case where the "experts" are wrong. Besides, he has already shown it to some "experts." That is why he is here.

There are many mass produced items that go unidentified. Would you like to try your skills on the infamous Piggnutts? :D No one besides Piggy has found another.. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,91892.0.html

Oh great. Thanks Bigcypress for getting me hooked on the piggnutts!! lol.We have something in common as i went for the netball idea as soon as i read it,but then it slowly waned. Didn't read all of it as i was going nutty, but my best guess would be a 1960's gas station promotion.Shell,Texaco,Esso,or whoever you have over in Texas where they were found. You know the thing.."get one free with every 10 gallons and collect the whole set!"
I have a 1969 50 states coin collection from one such promotion. My best guess. :icon_scratch:

The blizzard of 1982 left snow up to the top of the powerlines and after the highway was clear it was like going through a tunnel. Many people couldn't move for over three weeks. Wasn't great detecting conditions at all.

So far no evidence has been presented that HH's coin/pendant is ancient. To the contrary the modern replicas in various objects posted by bigcypresshunter IMO only giving weight to modern rather than ancient.

(And yes,old 60's early 70's soccer balls were made like those pictures, from leather.Weighed a ton when wet lol.)
you must be still on the first page.

Is that literally or figuratively speaking? ;D

you have a surprising rapier-like wit! Can't wait for the next instalment. Can you juggle too?

So far no evidence has been presented that HH's coin/pendant is ancient. To the contrary the modern replicas in various objects posted by bigcypresshunter IMO only giving weight to modern rather than ancient.
Evidence for it being ancient was in the first link posted on page 1.

Actually I can but only 3 objects at a time. Start with two in one hand, one in the other, and practice throwing a ball from each hand in the air and catching it with the other.... meaning you end up with two in the hand you initialy had one, and vice versa. Once you can do that it's just a matter of keeping your hands going. Something you can learn to do in a day. Now for 4 objects, that's out of my league.
