I am am admitted noob to the md scene, but I know enough to know that if you want to do "reality" in a md'ing show, you at least throw some reality of what it's like to be into the md'ing scene into the show. They don't discuss equipment for the most part, they don't discuss any realities on what md'ers actually talk about in real life with one another, they don't use terms I have ever heard from anyone in real life. In general, they don't portray the md'ing scene in any sort of reality.
This is all fine, as I get that it has to appeal to the masses. The problem I have is it being labeled a "reality" show, and it's utter uselessness for those who see the show and might want to get into the pastime and think that this is the culture. The show gives the impression that everyone uses an AT and jumps around like a moron at every bit of "roundness" (ugh..) that comes along. Reality is that this is mostly a solitary sport with many nuances in style and equipment, enjoyed by folks who are typically reserved in public while md'ing, who also enjoy being out in nature and other aspects never touched on in the show. I like seeing md'ing on teevee, but this show is crap imo.
Well thought out, and you have hit the nail on the head. It's a reality TV show that is far from reality, and I have hunted with friends, but at least in my case, metal detecting is very much a solitary hobby. In reality, as a spectator sport, it's akin to watching corn grow in Iowa. So to keep an audience, they have to make spectacular finds, and/or do something exciting. It's like on "Storage Wars," they always cut to an ad just as the box is being opened and you hear the words, "Oh my, what's this." So it's TV, and if you want to be entertained, just realize it's as phony as Indiana Jones finding the "Ark of the Covenant." I expect the more beer you drink the better the show gets.
