About "Diggers"...

I am am admitted noob to the md scene, but I know enough to know that if you want to do "reality" in a md'ing show, you at least throw some reality of what it's like to be into the md'ing scene into the show. They don't discuss equipment for the most part, they don't discuss any realities on what md'ers actually talk about in real life with one another, they don't use terms I have ever heard from anyone in real life. In general, they don't portray the md'ing scene in any sort of reality.

This is all fine, as I get that it has to appeal to the masses. The problem I have is it being labeled a "reality" show, and it's utter uselessness for those who see the show and might want to get into the pastime and think that this is the culture. The show gives the impression that everyone uses an AT and jumps around like a moron at every bit of "roundness" (ugh..) that comes along. Reality is that this is mostly a solitary sport with many nuances in style and equipment, enjoyed by folks who are typically reserved in public while md'ing, who also enjoy being out in nature and other aspects never touched on in the show. I like seeing md'ing on teevee, but this show is crap imo.

Well thought out, and you have hit the nail on the head. It's a reality TV show that is far from reality, and I have hunted with friends, but at least in my case, metal detecting is very much a solitary hobby. In reality, as a spectator sport, it's akin to watching corn grow in Iowa. So to keep an audience, they have to make spectacular finds, and/or do something exciting. It's like on "Storage Wars," they always cut to an ad just as the box is being opened and you hear the words, "Oh my, what's this." So it's TV, and if you want to be entertained, just realize it's as phony as Indiana Jones finding the "Ark of the Covenant." I expect the more beer you drink the better the show gets.

Obviously this thread didn't turn into the dog pile of the Diggers that the OP hoped. It's also obvious that we each have our own metal detecting style. Hey, that's okay. To each their own and live and let live. I don't personally do somersaults or cartwheels, but I do get excited when I find things. If the OP wants to act solemn and dignified when hunting, have at it. If the OP hates the show Diggers, then turn the channel. Problem solved.

The one thing I can say about the show Diggers, is that It's brought an entirely new generation to the hobby. I have always wanted to try out MDing since I was a kid. After watching a couple episodes of Diggers almost two years ago, I decided what the hey and took the plunge. My fiancee loves watching the show with me and has gotten into MDing as well. My elderly parents have even started watching and now realize what a cool hobby it has turned into. Dad will quiz me about the items I find and mom even seems amazed. I can't tell you how many friends and co-workers have asked me about the hobby and remarked that they plan on buying their own metal detector. I'd be willing to bet that a new metal detecting boom was started solely because of the show. With a boom, comes competition and innovation. That benefits everyone. Even the OP who despises the show.

Who does it benefit besides manufacturers and dealers? How does it benefit me to have a few thousand newbies running around screaming "Juice in the hole!," and leaving holes all over public parks and private properties without regard for our code of ethics?

I can't watch them anymore. I was screaming at my TV and them all thru the Marrietta Georgia episode. They don't know nothing about nothing. Also i have hunted in that area and I know what a relic looks likes when it comes out of those types of soils and I TELL YOU , the bullets and other items were faked. They were just too clean they those two didnt even know basic identification of basic civil war items. I am done with them.

This program is edited and broadcast by the National Geographic Society. NatGeo alone is responsible for it's content...(Not a couple guys with AT Pros). Do you really think The national Geographic would plant and fake findings? If so, maybe it would best for all if some of you would take the time and trouble to email the NatGeo Society and tell them where their experts have gone wrong...maybe National Geographic will hire one of you to lecture them on proper broadcast content and artifact identification! Then NatGeo Diggers will be as painfully boring as watching metal detecting on you tube.

If ya'll like watching "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo with Metal Detectors," knock yourselves out!

This a funny thing you ask...Through my different jobs and various groups I have become associated with and considering all the treasure hunters I have met over the course of six decades of life, I can say this without hesitation...the folks I know who would leave holes and exposed trash behind if they took up MD'ing would be the kind of folks who would hate the personalities and behaviour of KG and Ringy...likewise, the best and most responsible people I know love this show and the couple who have bought detectors because of affection for this show are some of the best people you will ever hunt with. One young man is 30 years younger than I am, and I am grateful to NatGeo for turning him on to the hobby!

"If you detect, show some respect"...KG and Ringy

I like the show and they are really good guys from everything I hear. Plus they are from my neck of the woods here in Montana. My wife and I get a kick out of their antics. Maybe I'm just a happy, fun-loving, man-child at heart. LOL

Then, in my opinion, you and your friends are the exceptions to the rule. God bless! :occasion14:

WOO HOO! So well said Mr. Mt Joe! Makes me want to go out and turn a somersault, but then I'd probably just break my hip, darn it.

It's a show. It's fun to watch most of the time and I do understand that what may have really happened isn't necessarily what the viewer sees. Editing and rehearsing antics are all part of the process. I applaud them for getting paid to do what they love. I'm rather certain they know they are blessed and I cannot believe they take that for granted. I say more power to them!

Well I guess next time I come across someone leaving holes while detecting I will ask them if they've seen the show, & if they have why haven't they learned anything from it, if they haven't seen it they should watch it & learn.

If someone yells juice or boom baby at me while I'm detecting, I will try very hard NOT to wrap my detector around their neck. If they ask how much the old zinc cent I just dug up I worth, I cannot promise I would be able to answer with a straight face, but I will try.

Is the zinc cent an error?

Is it ok if they call it a zincoln? or would that be out of line? :laughing7:

The competition is one of the reasons people don't like the show. They want to keep the hobby quite.

Juice!!! Lol, yeah those guys need to lay down those AT-Pros and just walk away... Very annoying

It's simple... If you don't like it then don't watch it. The show is going strong in it's third season. Personally I think the people who don't like it watch and talk about it more than the people who do enjoy the show. In a way I think the people who say they don't like it are creating more and more interest in the show then ever. BTW If someone thinks people don't act like them they are dead wrong. I have been hanging out with the same friends for almost 40 years now and weather we are metal detecting, bass fishing, hunting, motocross riding, playing basketball or drinking we do it to the max and never worried about anyone's perception of us. All I know is we had the time of our lives and I live for those moments in life. I do hope at some point in everyone's life that they did get to experience what KG and Ringy are experiencing, I know I have over the past 40 years and hopefully the next 40. If I did it alone though I doubt much of it would have happened and that would have been a shame.

....again, its a TV show, bad product, no show. Would you rather watch Bob Ross metal detect?

I am a live and let live type of guy, but this elitism is ridiculous, if you don't like the show, change the channel. Nobody is forcing you to watch it.

Much rather watch Bob Ross.....

I am a certified Bob Ross instructor....:D
