About "Diggers"...

I think all of the antics are funny and it is done for entertainment purposes only, I would bet money that they wouldn't and don't do that in public, I like the fact that they don't over inflate the monetary value of the stuff they find and are excited to find a wheat penny or a mercury dime. To me it is hands down better than any of the other detecting shows I have seen, also good for them that because of the show and NatGeo that they are able to gain access to some killer spots, I would hunt with them anytime, without the camera's of course! Also I myself have done the Happy dance 3 times (not quite as extreme as they do) when I found my 3 $5.00 gold pieces. Goodluck and Happy Hunting!.........Scott.

At my ripe old age of 69, I have never (except on the TV show called "diggers") ever seen men that age show such childish behavior. I know that some people get exited a lot easier than I do, but those guys (and yes, I know they are acting) behave like two 9 year old children who just saw their first unclothed woman in a dirty magazine somewhere in a pile of trash, when all they found was a wheatie or a civil war button..:icon_scratch:

I don't know any (real) adult men who act that way unless they are purposely wanting to act like a fool, and I would be totally embarrassed to be in their company too. I would consider it beneath my personal dignity to consort with or associate with them. In fact, it most certainly must not be a good thing for a detectorist's positive good image either, since similar silly behavior has already given us names like "scrounge", "Bum", no-account, "welfare recipient", lazy, unemployed, and "jobless". A better composure and a more dignified mannerism is what we need to project, not the doltish foolery portrayed in the series, all in the name of "acting"..

At times I wonder if the National Geographic Society has put them in up to it for that very purpose, to try to make them look like buffoons and bums in order to help to wash us out of our right to use metal detectors. :dontknow:

Nevertheless, I would refuse to go metal detecting with men who behaved like that, they would be to me akin in the game hunting world as someone who shows up to stalk deer while their car alarm goes off. That show embarrasses me so much that I most surely hope that my European constituents don't ever think I am like that in any way..:icon_thumleft:
You would refuse to go detecting with them and I would refuse to go detecting with you...your too dignified for me....God forbid that someone could get excited and have fun with their hobby...once again, someone with the attitude that if its not done their way, its the wrong way.

Isn't it amazing how every single thing they find is connected to the famous General or person of interest,,,,, then the "nectar" seems to cause mental problems of disturbing jibber. I guess one could say I do not care for this TV show of stuppidity !!!!

Well at least it attemps to reveal history to kids that you don't see in school common core books

hmmm I would have suggested the Condom container they found on last nights show
had Wild Bill and Calamity Jane cooties on it :laughing7:

I liked the Miners tag with name !
and I would have liked to find the Shaving kit
& the silver Bar also.

Pay attention to what you are seeing, at the end of each show when they have the local historian & or archaeologist looking at thier finds there are literally dozens of finds that were not aired or shown when found, so to say that every find they make is "connected to the famous general or person of interest is kind of showing a stuppidity!!!!"

When a man designs detectors, manufactures them, troubleshoots them, and repairs them, it isn't party time. This gives me and other people like me a somewhat different perspective of dignity in the detecting world. Or does it? Men like those found in the video, create really negative images of what this detecting world is all about. The world in general views us all here as a bunch of losers anyway, so why should we wish to perpetuate such a bozo image to them - just to satisfy their need to have someone to insult even further?

So I have a few expected questions:

#1 Would anyone in their wildest dreams imagine Keith Wills, George Payne, Jeff of PA, or Dave Johnson to behave like that?

#2 Would they wish to see a 69 year old sophisticated beyond anyone's wildest dreams man behave like that? NO! :icon_thumleft:

#3 Should a dignified, mature, classy American male "party?" Or should we never grow up and stay like juveniles?

#4 And why shouldn't metal detecting be considered a dignified activity, chasing women is dignified, is it not?

(:laughing7:I'm having waaay tooo much fun with this..)

BTW, the show is a show, it's fake, and we all know it. Only in two lifespans would two people find most of those targets in such a short amount of time. The series is designed for those who are fairly ignorant of this world we enjoy here, albeit it pretty much askewed from the real world of metal detecting. As for myself, when I go deer hunting for example, I try not to portray a negative image of someone out there with an Uzi mowing down the little "deersies" with a 40 shot clip filled with 50 cal BMG loads and then acting like a 17 year old kid that just ate a load of go-fast. BTW, and I don't act like a maniac when I shoot a deer either, all I did was kill a deer, and when the game warden confronts us all for our licenses, he will confront me first, and it has to do with my age, presentation, and my polite behavior, I'd bet money on it, been there, done that already.

I had a nun tell me that I was "looking for money" once, so I pointed at my BMW that I worked my rear end off to get, and asked her if she really thought I needed "money." She had no answer for that one, she just had the wrong idea about us and our hobby, thinking all we wanted was some drug money or enough to buy a pack of Camel Filters. If we all behaved as well and respectfully as we would like others to behave toward us, it seems like this would be a better world to live in and to rear our children in, and people would show us the respect that we wished for, or so it seems to me. The show is silly of course, but yes, it is supposed to be warped and silly. Even the giant holes they dig and the way they leave the soil is oftentimes disrespectful too.. but there is a motive for that one, and we all know what it is too..

Peace.. LL :icon_thumleft:

They say the finds COULD be connected and well, they could be....they use a lot of sarcasm and give possible scenarios...at the end of the show they get serious and talk about what their finds really might be.

Juice, when a man designs them, manufactures them, troubleshoots them, and repairs them, it isn't party time. You could easily own one the detectors that I had a part in the creation of. This gives me and other people like me a somewhat different perspective of dignity in the detecting world. Or does it? I would never tell you how to act when you detect...give other people that same respect. This show has shown people that we aren't just losers scratching in the dirt for spare change. Why do you always throw in your credentials when you talk to someone? No one else on here does that. :dontknow:

These topics always remind me of my old grumpy friends that i spent years fishing with listening to them gripe about almost everything ....but i enjoyed all them grumpy old guys and miss them now there gone

"Diggers" is scripted. That doesn't mean they guys are given lines or anything, it means they're acting as normal as possible (with cameras all over them) but are constantly given directions to enhance the scenes, as in reshooting finds for greater impact.

I'm a 50-year vet at detecting and an expert on cleaning found items -- so much so, I work with museums in restoring everything from coins to ancient farming implements. I bring that up because that is where the true scripting (to me) comes into "Diggers." I promise you that many finds are dug, cleaned and reburied. Sure, that's fine for satisfying their viewing audience, but it's a tougher go for those of us who live and breath metal detecting. It gets even tougher when the guys have to go into their "nectar" rants for a second or even third time -- though I think the cameras often shoot the rants on initial contact, then adjust the following scenes, after finds are cleaned up.
Like many detectorists, I take in the show to savor the finds -- which are legit -- and to dream of being allowed onto pristine, undug properties, the way the "Diggers" are.

I told my wife that the miners in Nome must feel the exact same way about "drama" portrayed up there as we do about the antics of these guys. I would like to find Wyatt Earp's bullet, though.:tongue3:

I guess the difference between the show and actual detecting is they are trying to attract people and crowds, and I'm trying not to. Especially when I'm finding my boring can slaw, pop tops, nails, tinfoil, diamond ring (whoops)!

I'm happy for the people that got into the hobby because of the show, even though I could only watch half of a show.
I don't watch reality shows either, not my thing. I'd rather be out there doing my own detecting, and finding. That's just me.

I would like to see variety of different detectors used and compared at the same site, that I may watch! Or tips on how to tweak different detectors to get the best performance from them.
I did watch a couple of "moonshiner s" episodes to see the areas, what stills looked like etc., for general info.

Ca'mon now, I'm close to your age and I can't believe you have never seen Abbott and Costello, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, or the Three Stooges. How about the Marx Brothers? Those "men of that age" brought laughter and happiness to millions over the years. What are we supposed to do, watch Vladimir Putin take over the World?

There was a video on one of the sites of the diggers mding. I think because they wern't on TV, they were acting like the normal mder. They made some nice finds and were pretty much normal. I have to admit I watch them to see what they find, not how they act.

I just picked up on a series that I originally passed over because of its name "Salvage Dawgs", about a company that salvages from old buildings. But despite the horrible TV name, it is a reality show with minimal mugging or overacting, and it's very interesting to watch how they pull apart old buildings.

yes a bit of a lame name.

I just set up to give 2 episodes a try

The one where they are Salvaging Wood

& the one where they are salvaging Bottles & glass.

If I like those, I'll probably set up for series recording

I need to see first that they are not exaggerating values.

Thanks

Lookingdown, the "credentials" as you call them, are done there to exemplify why I have a ($$ invested) interest in not making myself out to be a foolish-acting person, as someone above implied that I should be. Other people beside those you might know - monitor me here, not just you.. And as anyone can plainly see, much of what I wrote was purely facetious anyway, done so as to not inflame or put on guard those who delight in warfare of some kind. The question still remains unanswered though, would any of the above mentioned men act that way? And should I? :icon_thumleft:

I have noticed something very interesting too, that out of my 552 or so post in my 9 years here, compared to your 4004 posts in your 4 years here, I wonder if maybe you might be a bit bored and could use more than one hobby, because that means you post 1000 per year while I post 60 per year..

I have two questions for you..

#1 Do you think I addressed any of my original post (just) for you, out of the thousands who haunt this site?

#2 Why do you (often) criticize people instead of engaging in a friendly discussion with them, I see it often?

I started detecting for the thrill of the hunt and the fun of it and that is what has kept me in this hobby for over 15 years. While I might not swing from trees I can tell they love what they do and they have their hearts in this hobby as do I. So they act like kids who cares they are living the dream, they metal detect some of the greatest spot for a living, if I could take their place I would do so in a second and you can bet I would act just as crazy as them for that chance to do so.
