I had to sideline for awhile, too much quarreling, brand defensiveness, and seeing certain people waging war on others. It got to be too silly for me after awhile..

At my ripe old age of 69, I have never (except on the TV show called "diggers") ever seen men that age show such childish behavior. I know that some people get exited a lot easier than I do, but those guys (and yes, I know they are acting) behave like two 9 year old children who just saw their first unclothed woman in a dirty magazine somewhere in a pile of trash, when all they found was a wheatie or a civil war button..:icon_scratch:

I don't know any (real) adult men who act that way unless they are purposely wanting to act like a fool, and I would be totally embarrassed to be in their company too. I would consider it beneath my personal dignity to consort with or associate with them. In fact, it most certainly must not be a good thing for a detectorist's positive good image either, since similar silly behavior has already given us names like "scrounge", "Bum", no-account, "welfare recipient", lazy, unemployed, and "jobless". A better composure and a more dignified mannerism is what we need to project, not the doltish foolery portrayed in the series, all in the name of "acting"..

At times I wonder if the National Geographic Society has put them in up to it for that very purpose, to try to make them look like buffoons and bums in order to help to wash us out of our right to use metal detectors. :dontknow:

Nevertheless, I would refuse to go metal detecting with men who behaved like that, they would be to me akin in the game hunting world as someone who shows up to stalk deer while their car alarm goes off. That show embarrasses me so much that I most surely hope that my European constituents don't ever think I am like that in any way..:icon_thumleft:

I would rather watch the "Rachel Maddow Show." Just sayin' :hello:

Lol, I thought about starting this thread after watching tonight. I chalk it up to "teevee" production, no one actually acts like that. I was thinking earlier about what would make a good MD show (enough with the "cologne" and "roundness" and other cute terms..ugh), and I think a show that focused on the questions MD'ers have would do well - different types of machines (PI, VLF etc), various manufacturers, different venues, scoop types and tools etc would be great.

Those guys act like tards, and don't reflect reality in any sense of the word.

Would anyone but me watch this, for an hour each week ?

I hope natgeo isn't headed down the same path.

Yea I thought so :laughing7:

in all honesty you are right though it has to be all an act.

I don't doubt they joke around more then normal,
But I have yet to see an episode where they are filming one of them detect
& hear the other one in the back round Hootin' & Hollerin' like they found a safe full of Gold

So it's obvious the camera needs to be on them before they act the fool :laughing7:

I also doubt the camera Man/Men follow them around.
I know someone over my shoulder with a camera while I detect
would be too much of a distraction for me,
& too much of a Bore for them.

oops another nail, oops another nail, Ooooh a rotted Zinclon, Hmm can slaw :tongue3:

I'm sure it's more Like Hey check this out, Well have to use that one later :laughing7:
hey I reburried a button I found over here, I'll jump around and climb that tree for ya

From what i read on here the At Pro only digs the good stuff....its almost like the whites "you can see it in the ground before you dig it up"

"Nevertheless, I would refuse to go metal detecting with men who behaved like that,"

I wouldn't even go drink beer with them, because after I got done telling them what I thought it wouldn't be pretty, and at my age the bumps and bruises take too long to go away.

Unfortunately its the TV-industries need for drama and entertainment, and which takes us for fools. Just look at all the different "reality shows" that has something to do with our interest. All of them have at least two different storylines involving arguing/childish behaviour. My questions, why? Is this somthing that triggers the American TV-audience? Its just irritates the heck out of me...

I don't watch those digging shows. But they would not be on the air unless people watched them. They have a new disgusting reality show every week.I would rather watch congress in session. At least i know their bs is real.

there are a few I watch Diggers, Swamp people, Amish Mafia, Ice Cold Gold & Criptid & game of stones
are airing new shows at the moment.

Swamp People, Ice Cold Gold & Diggers are the most believable of those in season

Amish Mafia, game of stones & Criptid the most exaggerated .

Worst I saw was last night, 2 Amish guys enter Hardware & start destroying things
on camera because they couldn't get a refund for a light Bulb without a receipt ? & the store owner says Stop please, I'll give you a Refund ? :o is it that easy ? :o

I'd swear Amish Mafia had Woody Harrelson in disguise as the new character Bear
the Amish Psychopath (or Amish Mafia Kingpin " )
I'm waiting to hear him ask "What ? I have a Booger Hangin ?"

#1 is Antiques Roadshow. Pawn Stars just to see the "stuff" people bring in. American Restoration & American Pickers for the same reason although if the "pickers" showed up here I would make that bottom feeder, cheapskate Frank wait in the van while I showed Mike around and... History Detectives, etc. I can't stomach Scott Wolter and the way he makes the things he looks at fit his story even when the facts actually prove nothing. Next episode... Proof that the Vikings landed on Mars... I try to watch hoping for an interesting episode and end up changing the channel. Moonshiners because I'm in the heart of that area and while some of the show is a little hokey it's mostly based on fact. Diggers I'm on the fence about. It's not quite as bad as "BOOM Baby" but it's running a close second. At least they generally show proper removal techniques and respect for the history a bit more than the other buffoon who would dig graves to steal Gold teeth if he could get away with it.. There are a couple others I like but I'm still on my first cup of coffee & not awake yet.

I doubt anyone would act like that in real life but guess what, yep you guessed it, IT SELLS! Who would watch me, for a half hour, walking around a Pittsburgh park, only to find a few coins? Not me! I wish I had the chance to search just one of the locations that they are permitted to dig. I might not go that over-board but the excitement would be pumping. I watch every show as it gets me fired up to go out. Just last night I watched two shows and could not wait til today, only to find an inch of snow! Can't win! Remember, the remote has a button on it that changes the channel if you do not like a particular show!

I'm kinda green when it comes to detecting, but I started jumping up and down when I found my first item (a jar lid) yesterday. So I don't really have anything to say about acting childish. :p

The first "Reality" show that I remember was on MTV, and I wondered to myself then why anyone would rather watch ignorance, dysfunction and overall bad behavior when you could watch a Scorpions video? THOSE guys could ROCK!!!! :headbang: The sad thing is that TV hasn't gotten any better. The wife and I just watch less and less TV, which, I think, is a good thing! I'm so new to MDing, though, that I love watching those guys. Yes, it's embarrassing when a doofus eats grass and hangs upside down from a tree because he just found a frypan handle, but they get to hunt the (sorry!)"honeyholes" that I could never get at. They pull things from the ground that they don't have a clue about, and an archeologist identifies it. I'd like to point out that I've seen finds that others post here, and someone almost ALWAYS identifies it!!! This MD community is a great resource, and I'm thankful for it! You guys are all great!!!

Two things 1. I don't believe I ever want to party with you and 2. I didn't realize metal detecting was such a dignified sport.

I'd say most of the acting is just that. Watching a guy walk around in the field for hours swinging a metal detector is boring. The mundane finds that Diggers turn up are well, mundane. They're not finding the ark of the covenant or pirate gold every episode, so they have to grab the attention of the audience some how.
