Hey guys, I am making a shadow box of our recent CW era camp finds for my son who will be giving a little presentation in history class at school, since they will be studying the Civil War next week. One of the bullets we found has a little hole in it near the top.(doesn't go all the way through). Why is this?

Also, what were grommets used for during that period? I assume tents, anything else?

I'm sure you don't have this problem in TX but when we were living in MD my son brought one of my minie balls to school (4th grade) for show and tell and wound up in the office. I got a dressing down from the principal.

Really? What did they think he was going to throw it at another kid? I don't think I will have a problem here, but will ask the teacher first just in case. Thanks for the heads up.

If that is the case will show everything else except bullets. :-\

I said it was an historic artifact and she said it was a bullet nonetheless and that other kids might get "excited". I said then it sounds like the "other" kids are the ones with a problem but wound up apologizing and dropped the whole issue. Can't argue with pig-headed bureaucrats.

I really hate to say it but, yeah I'd check first.

I have been thinking about this thing with the bullets. If I ask and the teacher says no bullets in the display, I will not even bring the display. Nothing. What is a Civil War display without bullets anyway?

You may want to take nice photos of the bullets and/or blades found and put the photos into the display. Win-win scenario.

I taught high school for umpteen years, and a few of those years I taught US History. I would have more than welcomed a CW display, BUT today school is a different place (sad, but true.) It seems at least one group or another is complaining about something/anything. School use to be a safe place, where parents could drop off their kids, and not worry about them being shot or killed. So, with that being said, I would put the bullets in the display and SEAL it so it couldn't be opened, and drop the teacher a note letting her know such. Just my opinion, Breezie

It doesnt surprise me the anti-gun people are nutz. It the same mentality that thinks meat comes from a grocery store.

Yet those mindless minions of public "service" will allow a policeman to saunter into a school wearing a gun, nightstick, taser, and handcuffs, without demanding ID. It's all part of truth suppressing political correctness. It reflects the madness that grips our once sane government and deteriorates our once free society. They want us to fear everything as they do.

Its already well under way. EPA regulation of CO2 emission IS tantamount to a life tax. It starts with industry under the guise of greenhouse gas reduction. Next our very existence is condensed into a personalized "carbon footprint" and taxed and controlled accordingly.

right- no safe displays of the historical artifacts of what this great country has experienced, but they can all go home and play true to life video games---then prepare to be fodder for the worthless aggression the corporate world claims as national pride.....all part of 'dumbing us down'---

I will be doing a living history Civil War presentation for the 4th graders at my local (Fairfax County VA) elementary school next week. The teacher is sending me paperwork to allow me to carry my rifle and bayonet on to school property. I guess I should ask the question about the bullets... ::) My assumption is if I can bring a rifle, a bullet or two would be OK. I read the law and it indicated that "with permission" and "for educational purposes" I could bring a weapon onto campus.

My son said the guy who did the presentation last year actually fired a cap in the classroom. I was thinking of doing the same. I guess I should notify my attorney and have bail money handy.

I'm sick and tired of 'political correctness.' Just last week, some friends and I were watching Survivor on TV, and I said, 'they have a midget on Survivor this year.' One of my friends said, "it's not PC to say midget; they like to be called little people." My thoughts were, my ancestors were made to walk barefooted in October from North Carolina to Oklahoma, yet, I'm not offended when I dig an Indian head penny, and say I've found another 'Injun.' So apologies to all if I'm not PC, but I guess I was raised in the 'old school' where people worked for a living, had guns & hunting dogs, and had prayer and the Pledge of Alliance in school. Just saying, Breezie

thrillathahunt, why didn't you come to me first :dontknow: :laughing9:

Anyway, there is a way around all of this  If the bullets aren't allowed, make the shadow box, but just take several pictures of it and have him bring the picture to class. Also, take individual pictures of the other items where you can enlarge them for others to see from their seats.. On the back of each picture, just write a short story of the particular picture.

Example: Minnie Ball 58 Cal - ability to shatter, or sever a limb
Grommet: used to tie down tents and tarps.

Yeah, I got a little carried away on that Minnie ball, so you can tone it down a tad :tongue3:

I betcha didn't think I had it in me :laughing9:
