Hey guys, I am making a shadow box of our recent CW era camp finds for my son who will be giving a little presentation in history class at school, since they will be studying the Civil War next week. One of the bullets we found has a little hole in it near the top.(doesn't go all the way through). Why is this?

Also, what were grommets used for during that period? I assume tents, anything else?

right- no safe displays of the historical artifacts of what this great country has experienced, but they can all go home and play true to life video games---then prepare to be fodder for the worthless aggression the corporate world claims as national pride.....all part of 'dumbing us down'---
I'm sure a lot of you have been to the new visitor's center / museum at Gettysburg.. their relic display is smaller than the one I have in my room. Its accompanied by a sign that basically says OBTW we have over a million artifacts NOT ON DISPLAY.. huh? Years ago when it was being planned I read an article in the Wash Post describing the radical changes. They said.. and I quote.. they were trying to DE-EMPHASIZE the battle.. de-emphasize a battle.. at a battlefield. Now I'm actually shocked they displayed anything at all. The NPS is the poster child for political correctness.

Actually Spart, your extraordinarily unorthodox wit never surprises me. ;D

It doesnt surprise me the anti-gun people are nutz. It the same mentality that thinks meat comes from a grocery store.
These are the same people who don't keep score at the little league games so no one gets poor self esteem. Makes me sick!

Actually labeling the Minnie balls with a skull and Crossbones would be incorrect :laughing7:

Today the DOT uses that in hazmat placards to denote class 6 poison/toxins for transportation :tongue3:

Unorthodox :icon_scratch: Hmmm, I guess that is a compliment :laughing9:

I dunno, lead is pretty toxic. thrillathahunt if you decide to transport the minie balls to school I think you'd better display one of those DOT placards on your vehicle just to be safe..

They should have outlawed gun powder or cartridges, not bullets, in school. A minnie ball or spent lead bullet is not very dangerous unless a kid decides to chew on it. :tongue3:

CSA23K--how new??? I was really impressed 7-10 years ago when I first went there. If sense then, I'm really glad I didn't delay any longer. I try to stop when ever I make that RT15 run just to get out and hike around, but haven't been back to the museum. Gad, that's just as bad as putting the threatened power lines through some of those battle fields that I have read about. Hmm, they're not just rewriting history, but plain taking it away!!

I'm sick and tired of 'political correctness.' Just last week, some friends and I were watching Survivor on TV, and I said, 'they have a midget on Survivor this year.' One of my friends said, "it's not PC to say midget; they like to be called little people." My thoughts were, my ancestors were made to walk barefooted in October from North Carolina to Oklahoma, yet, I'm not offended when I dig an Indian head penny, and say I've found another 'Injun.' So apologies to all if I'm not PC, but I guess I was raised in the 'old school' where people worked for a living, had guns & hunting dogs, and had prayer and the Pledge of Alliance in school. Just saying, Breezie

Political correctness is not funny. It is a disease and a very serious one. It is called cultural Marxism and it has infected Russia, China and Europe. It is purposely designed to limit freedom of speech......I could go on and on. But I won't.

I suppose this will be its 3rd summer. The facility is actually very well done. The old one was dated and was built in the middle of the Federal lines on Cemetery Ridge. The new facility is in a better location and was designed after a PA farm.. stone facade, red roof etc. The museum on the other hand is a farce. By design its more cultural center.. i.e. another venue to show us how bad a people we are and what a corrupt history we have. The greatest battle in the western hemisphere and one of the most significant battles in western civilization deserves so much more. Having said that the battlefield itself is still preserved in all its glory and is still a great vacation destination despite the NPS.

Thanks for the update CSA23K, it's good to have the site restored to more of what it was. My big realization the last time there was that all the trees that have grown up around, though very large, were not there at that time!! I bushwhacked all around Big Round Top and it was all forest!. So, not that I would like to see the woods mowed down and 'restored', but one can't really get the whole picture with out understanding that. I'll make it a point to stop by the museum next time through. I'm so glad to have seen that 'complete' collection of firearms when I did. It will surely be missed.

Is that hole in the mini ball from a bubble or was it pulled out of a barrel by a tool that screwed into the mini ball? I've seen topics in this site about pullers for when the soldiers were in camp. They didn't want any accidental discharges....

Yep, and worried a bit more about their own conduct and upbringing, and less about everyone else's.......

If the powder got wet, and it wont fire, you have no choice but to pull it and its not always easy.. As a muzzleloader hunter, I cannot imagine needing or wanting to unload in camp. All you have to do is remove the cap. I leave my muzzleloader loaded all season, cap off and the hammer down on a piece of rubber..

Its already well under way. EPA regulation of CO2 emission IS tantamount to a life tax. It starts with industry under the guise of greenhouse gas reduction. Next our very existence is condensed into a personalized "carbon footprint" and taxed and controlled accordingly.

All so Al Gore can make millions, not to mention the political control involved....... just say no to the pansies, it will take more than a few who already have the nerve. Bring on global warming, I am tired of freezing while the pansies say the earth is warming........

I wish you could send the cold down here. We completely skipped winter this year. Its actually scary. I do not feel good about it. Global Warming I dont know, but can you imagining skipping winter? It only take a few degrees to throw plant life and sea levels out of whack. Cold will get colder and warm will be warmer. A few feet rise in seal level and we will need to draw up a different map of Florida.

The problem is human overpopulation but nobody wants to address it. What do you think happens when animals overpopulate?

I will be doing a living history Civil War presentation for the 4th graders at my local (Fairfax County VA) elementary school next week. The teacher is sending me paperwork to allow me to carry my rifle and bayonet on to school property. I guess I should ask the question about the bullets... ::) My assumption is if I can bring a rifle, a bullet or two would be OK. I read the law and it indicated that "with permission" and "for educational purposes" I could bring a weapon onto campus.

My son said the guy who did the presentation last year actually fired a cap in the classroom. I was thinking of doing the same. I guess I should notify my attorney and have bail money handy.

I thought of you when I read this.

I did my Civil War presentation for the forth graders yesterday. I got around not having the rifle by carrying a walking stick the same length as my rifle. I begin my presentation dressed as a Virginia farmer and talk about some of the events leading up to the war (Nat Turner, John Brown, 1860 election, secession...). As the discussion gets closer to wartime I shed the farmer's jacket and hat and put on my battle jacket and kepi. I simply turn the stick fat end down and it becomes my "rifle". I then get a volunteer to be a sergeant and I become Thomas Jackson. I call out orders and the sergeant repeats them to the troops. It's pretty entertaining. Most of the kids go right along. We march in place and they aim their pretend rifles to fire at the Yankees. Obviously the stick doesn't make the same impression as a rifle might, but the kids get it.

Thanks for the link to the lock downs caused by the reenactor. It is ridiculous on several levels. The guy should have had his rifle in a case or a bag...

I'm so sick of this p.c. crap. next they'll say no one was killed at a certain area of the battlefield when the records say so. I was sad when they took the old tower down but it did not belong at the place
it was. wonder if they allow the stores to still sell all the things that were forsale.its been years since i was at Gettysburg.
