So I went back to a church (1880-90's) I have hit about five or six times and came up with absolutely nothing every time not even much clad so today I went out after my girlfriend got home for a few hours before dark and found this! Looking it up now not quite sure if this is a key date or just the 1909-s. Any way cool old wheaty!

This was my only find there it's definitely tough pickings there!

BANNER!!!! It held up great, though it seems like many early wheaties come up in great shape. Congrats on finding one of the best small cents there is to find!

Here is something that I noticed before I found this coin on my V3i A lot of clad Pennies will come up in the 50- 53 range but most older wheats pre 82 will show up in copper range 73-76 but I have come across several early wheat pennies like this one that ring up in the clad range so everybody that does not dig clad penny signals better start digging them LOL! HH

What a rare treasure you've recovered, a dream find that very few will ever experience. Congrats, another vote for banner here.

Holy smokes, congratulations! This is incredible! S coins are one of the few things us West Coasters have going for us. This is one of the best. Huge find. Banner for sure!

Tough one to dig. Seems I see more 1877 Indian Heads dug than 1909-S VDB

Same, I rarely see 1909s VDBs posted compared to 1877 IHCs. Probably because 1909 was the first year and many people hoarded them from what I read, they can be regularly bought in uncirculated condition for this reason. You also need to be pretty far west to regularly find coins from the San Francisco mint. I also read that in 1936, penny boards came out, introducing a large amount of people to coin collecting. It was a fun hobby for those who could spare change in the great depression, and many people went through all their coins trying to fill out their penny boards. Most collectors noticed that the hardest cent to get was the 1909s VDB, if a collector did find one it would go straight to their penny board. More people were interested in coin in the early 1900's compared to the 1870's. Congrats on such a rare find!

Just got home and first place I had to visit was this thread. Also I had to add my BANNER vote for this meritorious find of a lifetime. NOPE, NOT SELLING!!!:headbang: I wouldn't either even if I was eating out of dumpsters and living under some bridge somewhere.:laughing7: Can you mail it to me insured because I just want to gaze at it and caress it for awhile? I'll get it right back to you I promise.:blackbeard::skullflag::icon_pirat::tchest::angel12:

The 14d is a bit more common, still very rare though. This is the king of the Wheaties (except for some errors). I agree, DO not clean it, it looks fantastic right now. I would get it graded by PCGS or NGC if possible. It was still shiny when it was dropped like you said, it seems likes the mint luster keeps coppers from getting too toasted.
