12 INCH TROMMEL BUILD

But you have to look at it as exercise and not hard work. This is what I tell myself, not sure I believe myself though.

In that case I've found that gold prospecting and mining are a whole lot of "Exercise" :laughing7:

Exercise is right. I finally finished running and panning the cons from my greaterville outing. To say the least, wasn't much gold. Most of my gold came from a hole up the creek I was in. The rest was small fly poops. So I do know which place I'll go next time. Now just need to get the Tramel going so I can just worry about cons at home.
The pic is total gold from about 25-30 gals. Most came from the 2-1/2 gal bucket. Kids dug the other hole which they took about 15 gal from. Heavy clay but I was hopeful. Then I did another hole downstream and took almost 5 gals.
I will say that the gold of size was chunky bits. Not like in Yarnell where it was flatter.
Next trip will be for more than the couple hours.

AZ I'll put that template to use and then think about how I'll do the motor. Sure would be nice to take cons instead of buckets of dirt home.

Garret I totally forgot about this auction that ended today. I was going to pick up this 12v DC geared motor for you. New and what a great price it sold for. Look down through the auction at the photos. Perfect for a small trammel.

AZ.
Do I go to HF or is this a radio shack part. Cheaper is better. Then I've got to start thinking how I want to put together.
Initially thought about a 10-12" PVC tube. Cap end. Then would slide into bucket end that's on PVC support legs. Then I'd do the same for input side. Then for moment I could run manually to play with ideas. Like do I need to use my other pump from highbanker to hook to a wash line in the trammel. I think the pump I got might work for dual purpose.
However, if the motor and gear won't be much. Maybe I'll start with that.
I was at HF the other day and saw a couple motors. One was a honda for 70. Think it was a 2-1/2 hp gas. The only thing about that is the noise.

Oh I thought you were going 12 volt DC. Hmmm where did I get that? I think with PVC you can use a flat belt around the PVC trommel tube.

I was going to build a bucket trommel classifier to sit over the hopper of my highbanker and a small gear motor like that would do just fine.
Right now though I have way more projects than I have time. Looking more like I may need to start getting up earlier and staying up later just to make a dent in my list. :tongue3:

My current priority is building a chain flail ore smasher for a hard rock mining adventure to take place late spring early summer this year, along with building other related equipment.

GG~

I just might make it a 12v DC. Just depends on the time to build and cost. I'm simple in thinking, and you gear heads just amaze me on how we could incorporate a motor and then toss in some gears to get right RPM's. I'm looking forward to expanding the knowledge again. Been years since I've dusted out those cobwebs. Lol

I guess part of this could be. What would be the right RPM's to use? Would that window washer motor work for that? Then, do I use a belt instead of gear driven. Maybe include a variable switch like in the vehicle. That way can easily control speed for different material.

Post 385 above I showed a variable speed controller. Here is a small trommel with a windshield wiper motor from the EXPO show... I could not stay long at the show as something popped up at home that I had to head back to Tucson at 12:30.

I have a javolin trommel that's 12volt with a wiper motor . It works good

Missed ya. Got there just before 12. Saw those trammels. Briefly of course. Notice the spray bars above the tube. Would seem better on interior.

Did you see the trammels by newage creations (I think it was). They had a reverse trammel that took the cons back up to top (front) and then down chute to the sluice matting. Seemed pretty good with not much water washing down sluice. Seemed like it could use less water.
A lot less space around area and seems easier to watch and maintain. Maybe possible to keep clean water for washing the cons and the other water for washing the dirt. At least that's how I saw it working. If they'd put in dirty material and then show it. Maybe they had it all as one water supply. Don't know how they got the cons to come back to the top while the other rocks went out bottom.

Oh yeah. It's the reverse helix trommel. So maybe I could get creative on this. Then again I've got the sluice part already. So trammel would seem next addition without too much cost.

My diggin partner has a New Age Trommel we have been running for a year. We run a two tub recirc sys and it takes about 60 gallons of water to run approx 1/2 yard of material classified to 1/2 inch before we change the water and clean out the tubs. I may go to a 3 tub system to increase material processed between cleanups. I am very happy with the trommel and its performance and reliability. It runs via 110Vac motor and pump. The Gen set is away from the trommel so that noise is not an issue. The barrel is driven via a vee belt around the OD of the barrel. Its A nice piece of equipment.

I visited Jay at JustBent and picked up the hopper and chute he built. What a fantastic job Jay did on the two items. Great guy and was able to bs a little before Jay had to meet up with his sons to work on his new shop. Little sneak peek of the hopper. I need to build a U shape frame around the hopper that's removable. The hopper will sit into the frame onto the 1" square tubing.

Nice work on the hopper. Sorry I missed you at the show Keith. I did hang out with Barry a bit and got to meet his sweet better half. Chris Ralph's talk on Placer Geology was good. The 20 oz Goose Egg nugget was very impressive.

Stan wish I could have stayed but something was pressing at home that i needed to address. I went to the booth a number of times to see the nugget but never saw anyone displaying the nugget. My buddy bought a drywasher and I am going out with him to give it a workout. I will take the Gold Bug Pro and go swing with my left arm. He's on his own with the drywasher.

I'm curious about that GB2 Pro. Why did they go to lower kHz from 72 to 19 (I think it is). I keep looking at regular GB2. That's what I was told to have as secondary because of ability to get small gold. Plus looking at GMT. Seems like it can point out iron paths. Not that my ATG doesn't pick that up, but it seems like a better unit for me to find that small stuff. Unless I save up for a PI unit. I held the new ATX from Garrett and it felt pretty heavy, compared to what I carry now.

Great work Jay did on that wash bin. I need to get a hold of him for my hopper. Great guy. Been a bit since I chatted with him. When's he moving? Maybe I'll hit around Gillette after I visit him.

Garret are you talking about the Gold Bug 2 or the Gold Bug Pro, I am confused?
