Haha... these guys really had to make do. This is another piece from the island. Completely in context with the other items.

No.. its funny. It would take a term paper to write out all the info and study and field experience with my local tribes. The band "Tecesta" had small short term fishing camps on that island. Context is everything. The variety of shapes of stones on the beach lends itself to finding one that's close to what you need modify it as necessary, sometimes very little and use it. The usage ware and context coupled with repeditive documentation of the same at numerous sites is what you draw your conclusions on. These items are not just laying around. They are in basically a pile of their discards. Bone..stone pottery and shell. I'm not going to try to use only a few photos to try to edgucate people with no local knowlage. It takes more than that. Its not like I have anyone else on here to give me a hand. It gets a little tiresome to be constantly questioned by non locals.. no offence guys but please just take it or leave it. Think about all the info I have shared on here in six months.. I've been doing this for years I can't teach a course in a forum.

Gator, on your shell napping tool and your pestles, where are the signs of tooling? I ask because I have 2 pieces really close to your shell napping tools, and 1 almost identical to your pestle. The 2 " napping tools" of mine, I think look pecked all over. The " pestle" that I have was kept because it was the only stone of that type in the area. Well, only one I have seen in that area. Just wandering what made you decide those were, in fact, tools??

Here you go NC. the knapping tool was already that shape. The evidence of use is visible in the chips made from percussion on two points. The handle of the pestels were modified to fit the hand by grinding and the use ware is visible on the working end. Also..the knapping tool was in a mass of debitage.

Tell me if you think this is a similar tool? Looks pecked to me, but could very well be natural.

I went out in the yard last night and snapped a shot of it for you to compare. It was found on a site along with multiple choppers, scrapers, and agricultural tools. I don't really know that it is anything. It just looked similar to your piece, in my eyes.

Have you ever seen a midden? If so have you ever seen one opened up to show its layers? I can go pick up something that looks like the shape of that pestel in my rock flower bed right now. If you don't know or don't have real context we could play this game forever. I think you should use your ability to dismiss items and consider them based on study of what context consists of and what if any context your Item was in. Also use your local archaeological records to help determine form and function. Just because you make a surface find near other surface find..those are all just isolated finds that have zero context in relation to eachother. A cigarette but could have been on the ground next to it...see my point.

Haha.. me too

I honestly had no idea what a midden was until now. I googled it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but trash pit. How do you find all that nice stuff? It doesn't come from middens does it? Blows my mind that you know where those things are. That is the coolest. I can see how you became so fascinated by Native culture. Nice! If I were in your shoes, I'm scared my whole house would be one huge midden!

Thanks man I'm glad you looked it up. Interesting huh? I hope you didn't take my responce as crass or anything it wasn't meant to be. It looks like it did what I had hoped..
Someone learned somthing. I'm glad and thanks for bearing with me on my long winded responce.

One man's trash......

Middens Are like markers. You can use the size, The location, And a lot of other factors Including their relation to High ground And water sources To put together Basically a rough Topographical blueprint Of a site. The Middens are very important in alot of ways when it comes to understanding the life of the Native Americans in my area.

No I took it as as intended. I'm glad you posted as you did, or I probably would have let it slide. Im going to read in depth about it when I have time. That's when you'll get bombed with questions. Lol

I'm sure glad I use my phone most of the time. I just hopped on the computer and...man.. those silly little.. "like" symbols are annoying! ! Instead of taking part in the conversation people just click like they have something to say but don't feel like doing it. I can't see those on my phone thank God! It's like talking under your breath.

I kinda like that. Honestly, I really appreciate the likes. Let's me know that people do not think that I'm a babbling idiot. Even if they do, it must amuse them, so. I'll go through and give some likes. I never have given any.
