Why would anyone wear camouflage while metal detecting?

I live in New Mexico. There are many hunting accidents because people here are too stupid. I wouldn't wear camo anytime during the year, either the game warden would stop your or some transplanted californian or new yorker would shoot you. They shot a guy off a 4 wheeler and said they thought it was

Driving home today and saw a guy crossing the road in full camouflage and carrying a metal detector! He was headed for a pond that was recently lowered for dam repairs. It's a well known spot that's rumored to have colonial relics there. I've never found anything good there, but that's another story. My question is why would you wear camo to metal detect? And why wear camo to detect the shoreline of a pond that's wide open with no cover? Does he think he's keeping a low profile by wearing camo? To tell you the truth, it seemed kind of weird to me. What's your thoughts on this?
Down here where imm at if u ain't got camo on youl wish you did lol you must be from one of the coasts but not ours (Gulf) huh I can tell you why he probably has it on one of two probabilities he hunts and has mostly camo so that's what he grabs or he's like me out of sight out of mind and figures you can't hate n drop a dime on something you never saw.

"I was surprised to see the small patches of trees in between shopping complexes that he was asked to remove deer from. maybe 100x200 feet."

Asked to kill? That sucks! Really...deer?
Here in North Metro Atlanta we have a way too many deer with no natural predators other than the automobiles and trucks. Illegal to deer hunt in north Atlanta except permission to bowhunt. They are nice to look at, the fawns are cute, but they eat almost every variety of flowers and can jump a 6 foot fence easily to get to your flowers. Footnote: A product called Scram really protects your flowers and does not stink.

Bowhunting works in Rochester after a decade of "Bait & Shoot" initiatives that didn't.

Wearing camo everywhere you go is a thing these days ya know.

Australia is home to 20 of the 25 most venomous snakes in the world.
Gee I'm jealous actually you have a program non the telly that says it all.
" 72 dangerous animals Australia"
We have a passive bunch of critters over here, heck most sleep all winter as it's so boring. :laughing7:
I guess they will say our animals over here are spoiled and lazy :P

My beardie (bearded dragon) sure is... (spoiled & lazy) and sleeps (brumates) 2-3 months a year.

And because he's Australian, he thinks it's winter when it's summer here, so any given year he may brumate through the winter or summer. (Either that or he's more spoiled & lazy than I thought! 😲)

Here he is giving me the "Stinkeye". Beardies are notorious when it comes to giving the stinkeye.

Personally, I only wear camo when hunting because I don't want it to pick up car, city or sweat odors. But, generally, camo is built for the outdoors. I don't think it's any of my business what someone wants to wear.

I spray Permethin on my detecting bib-overalls and jeans for ticks. But I keep a place in the cellar for such clothing away from pets upstairs (not good for cats).
Spraying my bow hunting camo is a must. Long ago I started spraying in a large rubbermaid tub, (on its side). One side then flip around and soak the other, next item right over that and so on until you have everything in there. Seal it up and let it permeate. Storing it that way keeps it effective longer. I was amazed to see bugs land and croak. I got some seriously sick pleasure watching skeeters fall dead when they touched me.
Seems that spray doesn't spook deer.

That makes sense because you are supposed to let it dry out completely before wearing it to avoid contaminating you.

Thing is they have air holes in the tub handle troughs. You need to silicone those closed ( or tape or whatever, but I like the silicone). I let that dry in the sun for days first so my gear does not obtain a smell of the rubber or sealant. Supposedly rubber/plastic doesn't bother them and folks use boots and gloves to avoid laying down human scent, but I can't imagine they don't smell it and recognize that it was not an act of mother nature.

Anyway, it does not stink up the house. Off season I can store it in another building, but I need access after my scent free shower in the house. I don't notice it smelling after properly dried.

About the OP. many of us have much camo, and as we replace with never stuff - for whatever reason - might as well wear it somewhere. But if I still plan to use a particular item for bow hunting it gets no other use.

Good point. I have blue jeans but pretty much everything else I wear is in boring earth tones except a few T-shirts. Wonder what that says about me?

Maybe I should go out to detect with a pink feather boa and sequin shirts? Turn up my detecting a notch. FABULOUS!
I find a boa constrictor is more effective. If anyone bothers you just put it down and say you had to let it go for feeding time. No one sticks around for that.

I wear whatever suits me that day as long as it conceals. 😉

The majority of camo pants (BDU's) are sturdier than Blue jeans and can take more of a beating. That is only my guess, but that's why I wear them when detecting. My shirt is usually a bright color for safety reasons as others have mentioned.

I have 4 or 5 pairs of BDUs, both desert and jungle, and I wear them several days a week, they are very durable, very comfortable and I love all the pockets.

On the beach… Colombia long sleeve shirt, shorts, water shoes
BackCountry, bushwacking…..5:11 pants, Colombia shirt, boots, gaiters.
