WHO WANTS TO DIVE FOR TREASURE

Re Sea Hunter's Patience

Personally, I see it as an adventure and for most people, the experience of a lifetime. Very few of us will ever have an opportunity to even dive for treasure...much less make a living or a career out of salvaging a long lost shipwreck. But the opportunity to just get a taste of it is fantastic in and of itself. I applaud Seahunter and his generous spirit and I hope to someday come and taste the adventure!

That is...if he continues his generosity... :headbang:

I could not agree with you more.

I can't imagine the patience that the Seahunter crew has putting up with guests while trying to conduct salvage operations. Having to keep an eye on guests and their safety while trying to work must be an added burden for the entire crew. I do view it as smart business practise; I'd be inclined to invest and support an operation that I had a first hand experience with.

Good on you Seahunter, may you have fair winds and following seas with your operations.

My guess is Scott is being silly to show how ridiculous Cornelius' opinion is. Scott knows how much it means to ll of us who have had the PRIVILEGE to dive with him! Thank you, Scott.

And just think how much money Scott is saving when he gets seasoned professional salvagers to help out on the sight!
Looking forward to my next Salvage Debriefing around the "conference table' at "Riptide Industries" Over and Out, Diver Jeff.

Seahunter,

I sent another PM. It didn't show up in my outbox however so I am not certain if you got it or not.

I know that everybody wants to dive for treasure , but .....sionce the currents in the strait of Florida are flowing from South to North , can anybody explain to me why the coins show up on Jupiter beach while they are supposed to come from a wreck to the North East of this location . The only way for these coins to show uo on the beach of Jupiter is from a wreck to the South- East of Jupiter beach . Now I don't care about the name of the wreck , I just want to point you in the right direction . In short , there is a wreck located to the South East of Jupiter beach . Most likely in a little deeper water . Check the maritime maps of the area and think about what may have happened in a storm . Where would the wreck be ? How deep were the approaches , and how high were the waves at that time of wrecking ? Use your brains and common sence to find the right answers . This is all I want to say about this socalled Jupiter wreck . Cornelius
Lets see some pictures of what you have found here in Florida. You talk alot about the wrecks here and must think of yourself as an expert and maybe you are I don't know. What I do know is this, the people you seem to think are wrong are the ones that are actually diving and working this site and are bringing up coins. They must know something about it.I just don't understand how you justify what you are saying, hard to argue with their success.

I have to say I respectfully disagree with AU Dreamer, Darren, and others. This is not a dive shoppe providing dive trips for paying customers. This is supposed to be a professional shipwreck salvage company. There are a number of other professional salvage companies that do hire divers and pay them for the dangerous work they perform.

Scuba or hookah diving by itself, just for pleasure, has inherent risks. Working underwater has even more risks. Surge, current, poor vizibility, lightning, squalls, marine life, spinning propellers, propwash excavators, winches, engines, shifting deck equipment etc...all make for a dangerous working environment. Having a steady, well-trained crew, with safety as priority, is of the utmost importance.

As a seasoned Treasure Salvor once said, every time you go to sea and come back, you have cheated death.

If you keep revolving people in and out of that kind of operation, whether the reason is free labor in return for a souvenir or the reason is to make someone's dream come true, you are asking for trouble. I seem to remember trouble has already visited this operation once before, just 4 short years ago.

Tevin

Correctly spoken Tevin . The remark from Scott to do away with the invitations in the future is his way of using psychology . Now everybody will be begging him NOT to stop and..........he will turn everybody anxious to dive for him against the seasoned divers that do not agree with his methods . Cornelius

Respectfully Tevin I think you misunderstand what Seahunter does there. They have their own crew of seasoned professionals. They are not using the volunteers IN PLACE OF crew. I also think you over exaggerate the risks of treasure salvage. You remind me of all the TV shows that cut in shots of sharks to spice up the drama of often-mundane salvage work. Yes there are risks but not every trip is life threatening.

No Corny Seahunter’s comment to remove the offer was in my honest opinion pretty sure sarcasm, as also read that way by some of the above posters.

Many of us seasoned divers agree with what he is doing.

The volunteers do slow down the operations to a degree and this is why a few salvors I know will not take people on board even if they were paid for it.

Folks, It's none of our business how Scott, or any other Salvor runs their business. Scott is successful, and he & Capt.Dom are nice enough to share their finds with us, and gives credit to those guests aboard their boat who are fortunate enough to recover something. Who are we to complain about the way someone else conducts their Salvage operation? We are free to run our own operations the way we see fit, so why complain about others with decades of experience that we may have never even met?

Scott, has the means to hire more, but he already has all the paid personel he needs to run his operation. He has no need to solicit volunteers. We should be grateful for the opportunity he gives us.

I think it is great that Scott is generous enough to allow me, Cornelius, or any other certified diver the opportunity to dive as his guest, from his boat, using his equipment, on his lease, at his operating expense, to dive and experience the possibly of recovering Treasure.

From what I see. Scott, has no financial necessity to recruit volunteer divers for his operation. There is no evidence that withdrawing his offer to allow volunteer divers on his vessel, or Treasure site, is merely a psychological ploy. I hope he continues to give us the opportunity to join him on a Treasure hunt, if we so desire.

Just my thoughts. Humble

I realize that to many on here I am a newby. That being said, I tossed this by a very good friend of mine (same guy who taught me how to dive) who knows more about treasure diving than many have forgotten (yes he is an old fart that has been diving forever(over 40 years I believe) and personally knows some of the biggest names that have ever dove the waters of Florida) and he thought that it was pretty neat that a salvage team would allow guest divers along with them. He even said that he would be up for going along. He also thought that it was neat that Seahunter shared some of the find (even a small bit) with the guest divers as in most cases a guest is not providing much to the operation and does slow it down.

To put it in perspective, he told me what the Fishers charge for a dive with them and what they get out of it.

Let's just say, that what Seahunter does helps bring out the adventurer in many of us.

Now I'm guessing here that if I do get the opportunity to dive with Seahunter and I my Irish luck finds that sunken box with 300 gold coins and a bag of emeralds in it that Seahunter will make me a happy camper. ;D

Hey Scott,
Did you ever get those extra md's you were looking for? I'm glad to see you're doing well on your site. Hang in there you're doing a wonderful thing for our community.

I have been away from home and had missed the recent posts about Scott's motives in allowing volunteers to dive with him.

I find it hard to understand how anybody who has followed this great thread over the years could doubt his motives for a moment. What Scott does in letting people experience the thrill of diving for treasure on a real, proven wreck site is fantastically generous and driven only by the best of motives. Please keep up this great practice of yours, Scott. It's great, not just for those lucky enough to have that experience, but for the TH community as a whole.

I have a lot of respect for Cornelius and he might well be right about there being another wreck in that area, but his comments about Scott's motives were uncharacteristically mean spirited.

We do have a full-time crew that is paid a salary and treated very well. We maybe allow one or two new volunteers per month, and most of the time they do find a coin. How an offer like that can be seen as some sort of back-handed business practice is beyond me, but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how far off base it may be.

Five years ago I was one of the first group of volunteers. I had an excellent weekend and made several new life-long friends. I also have the first treasure coin I ever found in my pocket...not every treasure hunter can say that.

It's easy to point fingers, but those of us who are here everyday are proud to be a part of it.
