Detector(s) used
Minelab xterra, Whites DFX, Notka Makro Simplex. Folks the price don’t mean everything, the question is are you willing to put in the time to learn the machine, experience will pay off I guarantee it.
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Well for those who care, some like chevys some like fords, this would be for those veterans probably. what units are we talking about, I think both companies are about the same age, what the difference in there electronics, and the purpose of there use. garrett at pro not real expensive, promoted by the cable tv treasure hunters I believe. A well rounded machine with set programs, and you can get programs and save them also. Seriously this is a question a lot would like to no are you paying for the name or are the electronics pretty much standard in comparable models, please give your opinion thankyou.

Let me put it this way, I have owned both brands, used and tester both brands, and examined the electronics inside both brands. I worked in electronics most of my life. Let me put it this way, you can't beat the quality of Whites detectors. I am still using a 13+ year old Whites XLT as my general purpose detector. It has preset programs and custom programs that you can tweak yourself. In advanced mode you can adjust almost anything in the computer. It has pinpointing second to none. You can place the coil dead center over the target and insert your probe there and touch it. It has an ID #, bar graph and symbol to tell you what the target probably is.
I have only owned one Garret, I am a fast learner! Just my thoughts. Frank...

Whites machines are overpriced. Other than that they are about the same as any of the other top machines, Tesoro, Garrett, Fisher, and Minelab. They all have their fans and detractors. It is ALL opinion. If you had your best find with a Whites, then regardless of whether another machine would have found it just as easily, you are probably a Whites fan for life. Chevy, Ford, Mazda - whatever..

I am with Terry on this.... We get used to a certain machine for all kinds of reasons... I've heard it said that your success with any detector depends on the color socks you're wearing that day.:unhappysmiley:

If you think of detectors like golf clubs for example, you might be able to get the ball on the green with any detector you're using but it might be easier with another kind of detector.:icon_scratch:

I have to agree with Frankn. I have 4 whites detectors and 1 Garrett. The Whites do everything I need, and the Garrett stays home in the closet.

Funny topic, metal detectors are like old cars/women, you cannot seem to let go...that being said, I love my whites! why you may ask? because its reliable and I have found my biggest find (not valuable) to date. Four 4lb cannonballs in one hole. (now used as door stoppers)

This is only my opinion so don't bite my head off,but I think the garrett's are more user friendly than the whites unless you're talking about the coinmaster. I used to hunt with my buddy who had a spectrum xlt. Don't get me wrong ,but I found it much more complicated than mine. But that's just my opinion8-)

My first major detector was a brand new, Garrett Master Hunter 7. I never liked it's performance even though I used it for many years. It falsed constantly and was very noisy and erratic, even after a factory service. I still see the same complaints from many Garrett users even on modern detectors. I replaced it with a White's 6000 proSL which was a wonderful machine to use. Stable, quiet and deep.

So after using only those 2 machines, I would have to pick White's.

A good detector in bad hands doesn't work, a bad detector in good hands shines. They all make good detectors. I decided on whites for my first detector and haven't looked back. If my first had been a garrett instead then I would have made all my finds with a garret and not a whites. Everyone is always looking for the better machine, when they already own it!

White's for me. I, like Frankn, had one Garrett....and still use an XLT. Nothing Garrett put out in the last decade has held my interest enough to purchase.

I'm not brand specific and have never used a Whites. Hope to soon though.
Thus far in my detecting, I've not purchased a "high end" machine. I do have a GTI-2500 that is still a quite capable machine. When initially released, it was surely ahead of its time. My AT-Pro works great in mud, rain, sleet, snow, etc. I must say I was disappointed when Garrett released a new PI machine. I hoped for a new VDI.
So this years new machine will be an ETrac . We shall see..
Good luck. Peace

I have been using a Gti 2500 and the DFX last few years and both great machines as far as performance compared to past units I have owned. Both have strong points but comparing the durability I would have to say the Gti 2500 by far is the more durable. Seems for me the Garrett coils crap out a bit faster though.

7 white's 2 garrets
the cx pluss all metal went out need to send in , the only white's ever sent in
were the ones i bought broken and sent in to have fixed came back good as new
25 pluss years old one of them
try that with a garret
what is an at pro owner going to do after 10 years when garret wont fix it
what a shame

Could that be because it does more? The XLT can be used almost turn on and go with the stock programs. Frank... 111-2 de Vinci.jpg

An added note: It appears Garrett is ditching the Ace line. I just saw some ace 250's (new) in one of my sale catalogs. I think they was $195.

Bought this older whites because of the price, my Brother has a whites and we both agree they are great detectors. Only thing, my Son broke the on off switch and I sent it back without getting a quote, $65.00 bill when finished, thought they might give me a break.

I don't know , all I know is that I found more with my bounty Hunter

Each person likes something different, doesn't mean others are wrong. You could say minelab is superior to whites due to the FBS. Does that mean its better? Not necessarily. I don't like where the control box is on the whites. Being metal, when you see used ones, they are usually dented or scratched from being dropped.

redloh

that a bout right 55.00 bucks and hour 10.00 for the switch
I have a classic l and ll the two I had to put a switch in i called tony at electronic exploration bought one he sent it by mail did it my self
that detector is a good sounding detector easy on batteries just switch them the speaker is the hardest on the batteries no depth loss
in discrimination not like some detectors
