Whites vs Garretts detectors (Your Opinion)

I grew up using Garrett products. I have never used (seriously) another brand. All I can add is whatever machine one uses be comfortable with it, learn all the functions (and how to use them in a given situation), and get a detector that matches the area and what you are hunting. My only machine right now is the AT Gold. It serves my purposes and more. If you are hunting salt water don't get this machine it's not made for salt water. anyhoo that's my two cents. Cheers all.

Rodger that, my friend!!! I think the research will be more fun than the digging...until that Colonial coin or Civil War artifact pops out of the hole!!! I was a history major in college. Europe may have some amazing things to find, but for only having some 350 years (give or take) under her belt, North America has much to offer!!! Just wait till our Nova Scotia breathren unearth that Viking axehead/burial site!!! That's what's exciting about this hobby. Metal detecting can find the PLACES where our history actually took place, making it all the more real for everybody. Hunt on, my friends, hunt on!!!
And that's what it's all about! Plain and simple. That right there my friends is what gets my blood pumping. Not that I would say no to a diamond ring at the beach but give me an old site full of relics any day.

You shoulda sent those garretts in evan after warranty expiration. I bought a used garrett in the 80's and it broke after about three years of hard use and I sent it in and they fixed it FREE OF CHARGE! No better company out there than GARRETT. Anyone ever do a little research to see just what Charles Garrett did in his life? The things he invented? Is there a Mr. Whiite? I've never heard of him. What did he do? I bought a Whites back in the 80's as well. A 6000 di pro I believe. What a pile! No ground balance option. Hated it and couldn't find those foot deep slick mercury dimes like I could with the Garrett.

Did you turn the 6000 Di on? 8-)

Whites operates as a team, not a person. Garrett, for what I have seen thru the years spent his time writing a lot of books and making detectors that require a lot of repairs. The 6000 di pro was a great detector, if you knew how to use it. Ground balance on whites is different. On my XLT It tells you what to do, basically lift coil to waist level, push enter, lower coil to ground level and push enter. It's that simple and you don't have to recalibrate as soil changes, It is done automatically. Why didn't you tell what model you own? Frank... NOONTIME GLIDE 4X6 CARD.jpgJest gliding Whites along.

I am on my second whites detector since 1990. I wanted a screen this time for more info on the target, the M6 has all the features I want, some I'm still exploring, and I'm very happy with it.

I have 3 pin pointers, whites, pistol probe, pro pointer. Whites Is old I have replaced the on/off switch myself twice. Got the pistol probe as a gift--it and I don't get along. Pro pointer works well but for some reason sometimes doesn't shut off when the button is pushed, but the light goes out. Still trying to figure out if it's me or the probe that has the problem.

Frankn I have used Garrett, Tesoro, Bounty Hunter, and a Minelab I had as a loner. None were as much a joy to use as the XLT. It is one of the best White's ever made. I'm sure we sound like fan boys to some here, but it really is a nice detector.

I agree about Garrett and his books, and I believe he puts out good books on detecting. I'll buy his books in a heartbeat, but I think twice when it comes to his detectors. They're not for me.

I read an article in the Mining Journal by Steve Herschbach and I understood that maybe rather than difference in manufactures the method the detector uses might be more important. Being VLF or PI detectors. The choice being based on the terrain. Anyone have thoughts on this?

You brand loyal people are funny (not haha)!

I've owned crap Whites, I've owned great Whites! I've used crap Garretts, I own a great Garrett.

It's not the brand but the model!

None of the models Garrett put out in the last decade have held my interest long enough to consider purchasing. I'm really waiting to see if Tesoro comes out of the 80's with their rumored new machine.

Those Garretts were purchased back in the early 90's....I didn't send them back to Garrett because I figured that after shipping and perhaps an expensive repair bill, it wouldn't be worth it. The Freedom 3 was good but really didn't like the GTA 1000 enough for me to send it back....The id would bounce all over the place on targets and it didn't really have much depth. That ole Whites, while being a beginners model did last a long time.....I personally like the M6, MX5 and MXT Pro which is on my list should my CZ5 quit. Then again, if it was worth it, maybe I'd get it repaired...but who knows this 20 year old detector could last another 20!

Good question. I've got the M6 and like it and I've got the AT Pro and like it too. I'd give the M6 the edge in parks at this time but there are days my Pro with the 5X8 will kick butt in ole schools. I also have the F75 limited and really like it. I guess its what ever you get use to and how much you want to spend.
