In any case she chose to get help from her family. Provided she takes the advice given about hammering out an agreement in writing prior to revealing the location of the possible cache, I think we can agree that this option is probably better than seeking out the help of total strangers.

Okay, I know a lot of you think this is a joke and I don't care. I have no skills or know how in treasure hunting and no equipment. So I see this as an opportunity. I realize that there are no guarantees.
The painting was given to my father in law by the owner. My father in law took care of him and his wife for many years. I have asked myself all of the same questions that you have asked. I don't know specifically who sealed it. Maybe he stood by as it was being done. Back then you didn't have to leave your stuff and pick it up a week later. So.....who knows. But if you are a treasure hunter isn't that what it is all about? But you are right why am I trusting a bunch of strangers? Although, when it comes to money or treasure its amazing how fast family and friends can become strangers! But I'm not trying to reel anybody in and I am not a "he". Like I said just thought I would go to the professionals with the opportunity that could benefit both of us. Thanks anyway.

I still maintain the only proof of it being authentic is to locate the treasure. You can have a professional date the paper, analyze the ink, map the geography. And that will prove it is old and perhaps an "authentic" map of some type. But still not prove that it is a treasure map, or even if it was that the treasure was not reclaimed buy the "owner" or someone else. I'd remember where I placed something without a map.

There is only one way to prove it involves treasure. It may be the location of his favorite ginseng patch that has been plowed over long since; or where "Ol Yeller lies sleeping.
