its funny when i when i thought about my first dectector I cant remember my first detector but I do remember the price about 280 pounds and that was when I was about 15 omg almost 25years ago. Funny thing is I never got to use it swopped it for a c64 head in hands. lol

My brother and I went halves on a Garrett Freedom III. I then got a Gold Mountain Cobra of my own.

Sandman, my first was a Whites 66TR. That is a circa late 1960s/early '70s machine. I got it used in about 1976, so it had only been out of production for 4 or 5 yrs. by then. But man was it a dinasour compared to what was coming out in the late '70s!

How deep could you get a coin sized target with your BFO? What years was that? As I recall, my 66TR could get 4 or 5" on a coin.

My first one was a Christmas gift from my wife in 1981 it was a
Bounty Hunter VLF/TR. I forget the model number but it was one
of the better BH's. No Tnet and No internet so It was an interesting
learning experience , I'm sure my county was another inch or two above sea level after I removed all those tons of nails from the ground ;D

My first detector was a Tesoro Compadre. I bought it in early 2001 and bought it because I did not want to buy a junk detector and to see if I liked the hobby. Well, I love the hobby and I still have it and use it today. It is my primary land machine. It is a great little machine.

I had a little cheapie back in the 70's for a short while. GTO Searchmaster (?) comes to mind. It was referred to as a "screamin' meenie". Been without ever since. Now I'm interested again. I located a Garret dealer in Boise in which I am going down to look at the Ace 250. Seems to be a popular model for us new guys. Plus a knowledgeable sales person would be a benefit vs a big box store. (I've all ready learned this since joining this forum, thanks!) ;D

My first detector was a Radio Shack. My first good detector was a Fisher 1220X. Now that was a good machine and I found tons of stuff with that machine. Still have it.

Mine was a White's Coinmaster 3000D series 3.....still have it, although it won't ground balance worth a crap now.
I attempted to cut and splice the cable to the coil to make it longer for a TH I was on and think maybe I screwed it up. Think I bought in around 1980...thats a foggy era to remember anything for me.

I pulled it out a few months ago just to see if it still worked.
I got a post on repairs if anyone can figure whether its shot or maybe if I just bought a new coil. It's been sittin in the rafters for years.

Thought this was cool...Popular Mechanics article 1917

I don't remember the name of my first. It cost $45 and came in kit form with square green coils- BFO in early 60's. I quickly moved up to Karl Von M. "Little Monster" BFO- $90. Now that was a workhorse. It lasted until the TRs came out in the mid 70's and then VLFs to the present day.

Obviously I haven't been around the block a few times like some of you, but my first was the Ace 150...

A rookie in the game, mine was a Discovery 1100 last October. Moved onto the 250 and now Explorer XS.

I think my first was a cheapo Jetco kids detector in the late 60's early 70's.

My first decent one was a Compass Coinhustler (or something like that) TR in the late 70's.
Nice little machine until I broke the stem right at the base of the coil.
After that, in 1981, I bought the ole trusty Garrett American SX TR machine that I still use today to pillage the schoolyard woodchips with.
So I think this year coming up will be my 30th in the hobby.

Keep smiling Sandman!
