What type of rifle do I have here?

It was passed down from my grandfather to me. It's a long story. I finally got it though. It came from northern Georgia. One family member appears to have tried to restore it some. My aunt has it now but I'm going to try to go get it next week. I think it would make a great display piece . I do k ow the barrel is 5 or 6 sided
Wow, beautiful Muzzleloader ,

Keep in mind, though that beauty may look old, it may not be.

I had one like that about 40 years ago. A fifty if memory serves.

It was from a kit. A damn good one.

SIDE NOTE: I have one hell of a 1.800 square foot play area (heated and cooled shop) and did some refining of the rifle, but it was impressive even before I did that.

Back in the 80's, one like this could be picked up for around $150.00 to $300.00, depending.

Any way you go, it's a solid keeper [and I'd have it ready to rock and roll by keeping necessary supplies dry and ready].

That would be a ONE IN A LIFE TIME FAMILY HEIRLOOM to me If The history that you have been told is 100% correct you have something that is worth more then the dollars and cents value If that story has some holes in it Unless someone else can refute your information I say your story has as much likelihood of being completely correct as any other person's version may or may not be totally true At that point I would be quite happy to own that gun and be proud to say you own an awesome gun that has been in the family since it was built As that saying goes That's my story and I am sticking to it until someone can prove otherwise like both the gun and your story !!

Here are more pics now I have it. It's loose in places apparently haha. No makers mark I can see anywhere just that dog and ducks engraved... I spoke with my aunt who had it and said my grandfathers grandfather gave it to him and my grandfathers cousin had it in his possession for maybe 20 yrs up until now.

Its very cool regardless. Id love to own something like that.

Sometimes the engraving is so light you cannot make it out. Age doesn't help. Curiosily it doesn't have a patch box in the stock. Most of those type rifles did.

That's a Goulcher lock with the dog engraving. He would only be the lockmaker though, not the gunmaker. The gunmakers mark would be on the barrel, somewhere between the rear sight and the breech.

I can't make out if this is a makers mark or not at start of barrel at the top

Chilli, can you own and shoot black power rifles in Aus?
Hi, yeah you can. There was a rifle range and club in a previous town I lived in that some members used them and had competitions. You'd hear them every second Saturday each month cracking away. I've never fired one though.
