Personally after being looked/treated like a contagious virus a few times by an archeologist.

I take great pleasure now stating that my life long passion is metal detecting.

In England the amount of finds recorded because of metal detecting surpass any that of the archeological digs.

So basically till the academia (NA) sets aside their hierarchical stance they will never be comfortable enough with a commoner with a metal detector.

8. What skill set or fields of expertise does a good treasure hunter need to have in your opinion? Patience, persistence and the willingness to research thoroughly.
Don in SoCal
So true Don.

Detecting a site a few times never tells the complete story.
Club in England would have a section of land.
Detect it for many seasons.
Then it starts to produce untold treasures.
The common phrase "We really suck at detecting "

I've worked the same patches of dirt for a decade. Each year it states yet another layer of the story.

Just from hunting a field site a few times on a permission.
It gave up only a few little recoveries.
I returned because of the lack of options.

The only coin recovered so far has been my gold Sovereign.
