Looks like something that may have been used to hold some sort of light or somthing over a fire.. Was going to say maybe part of a snare but looks like it would be to stiff for that.. Just my opinion..

I wish I did.. But I don't that was just my educated guess is all. I am very green to all of this.. My knowledge of gold mining ends at I know it's in the ground LOL..

I think this is an unfair game.....I have spent my entire life around hardrock mines and in them, and been around the "tools",for just as long,I have never seen anything like it.....what ever this was USED for was improvised in the need of the moment.Play a game with something that was actually manufactured for a purpose
I could see it being used as a "needle",to puncture the charge sack

Let's see first thought would be to stick your buddy in the eye and run off with the gold. Next dessert maybe kill a scorpion but that's not mining related. How bout push the explosives into the drill holes. I obviously need more clues.

The way you're holding it is meant to throw us off, right? They would of made a more substantial "handle" so moving on - it seems to be made "tension-wise"
to hold something "open". If you don't tell me I'm getting warmer, I quit.

oldbrundogs first answer sounds good too.

is it a well finder? you can use something that looks similar to it to find where a well should be dug.

but you need two of them coat hangers work as well. when they cross when you hold them loosley and walk in a pasture or hillside is where there is water..or a hole with water in it. normally a good place to find a ancient river bed or underground creek.

Im holding it as it would be used, you would guide it with the other hand, and no to holding something open, check out the first clues. location?

good luck.
