Hi everyone,
Please help us in identifying this little statue we found on a remote beach in Hilton Head Island, SC. We were just digging in some wet clay, sand, when we unearthed this little girl figurine. It is about 3 inches tall and 2 inches wide and made out of either some kind of stone or clay. The only identifying marks on it are the carved out body parts. We also found an idian arrowhead on this same very beach a year ago, but we don't know if this statue is also an indian artifact or not. Please help us in identifying this statue and and help us try to figure out what time period it came from.
Thank you,
Nick and Anna

Yes, we did clean it a little since the video.
Dont clean it anymore. :) It may be beneficial to soak it in distilled water to remove the salts. I always soak everything I find from a saltwater environment. Salt + oxygen can be very destructive.

nice Moss agate point!!!
Thank you, we didn't even know that it was moss agate until now!
We just thought it was a plain Indian spearhead and didn't know what it was made out of. You guys are really helpful!
Again, now it makes senses looking at other pictures of moss agate points, thank you again!

Thank you, will take your advice, haven't cleaned it since that one time with just plain water. Thank you for your reply.

Kuger: Sorry this took so long as it has lost some of it's effectiveness, but Eqyptians ARE Africans. And many of the ranking rulers are believed to have been more "black" than "arab" for the lack of better terms. Like Upper Egypt. But it was just an impression from the hair style, not an ethnological flash of brilliance on my part. Hair could just as easliy been indian, too. Actually, I wanted to say it looked like the popular style found on memorial brasses in the old churches of England from the 1550's. And the face is a dead ringer for the Manfeld family of Taplow, Bucks. Hmmmm... But then, not too many people know what I am talking about.

Between HighPlains & Kuger; I'm hysterical! :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:
BCH: Buckinghamshire. High Plains: You forgot to mention the hairstyle also bears a resemblance to the Dutch Paint Boy as well as Buster Brown.

Plugged ears. Didn't hear that to agree with it.

Yes, CBG, they do. And the women are REALLY homely because of that. I'm serious. But worst of all, the guy wears a nice suit of armour, but has very ROUND TOED armoured boots on. The funkiest.

Breezie: You phoned in while I was responding to CBG. But I am pleased that I have amused and entertained you. I'll be here all week, enjoy the buffet.

Wait---Did I misinterpret your histerity? Are you fearing for your life? If so, see kruger's remark and continue to be scared.

ALso, sorta like Dorthy Hammel. Yup, you got them all.

How did we get to Dorthy Hammel from a fertility statue?

I think we have covered all the possibilities:

1- American Indian

2- Egyptian or Egyptian Revival

3- Slave era African

4- Colombian

5- Modern

6- Buckinghamshire Mansfield Family

7- Mayan

After digesting the info & pics on a night's sleep, I'm thinking this statue might be hand-molded fired solid clay pottery (unpainted), which would fit the owners description of the weight, as well as the color. If the 2 circled areas on the back are convex, they could be kiln/firing blems. The mouth is perfectly formed, deep, and straight, which would have been easy to do in soft clay with a fingernail, but a bear if chiseling stone.

As far as fertility goddess is concerned, the majority of those have large breast and stomachs. Maybe this statue is erotica instead of fertility or either an individual's creative project.

I have no idea of the age, and we probably can't determine that without seeing the statue in person, but I wouldn't think it has been rolling around in the ocean too long since the nose and eyesballs are not worn down. I'm not saying it's new, just saying it doesn't look like it's been in the ocean a very long time.

Very interesting find, Breezie

The "fertility" statue that was given to me from pre-columbian Columbia was a "field fertility" thing, kinda like writing a prayer for a good harvest and burying it in the corner of the field, and was mentioned as a possible reason for the subject's existance, not as a direct comparison.

But the nose thing...........

After we get this figured out, I have a couple of semi-similar things that supposedly maybe came from a Mound found by an old arrowhead hunter. I figured it was the liars forum on ebay, but we'll see. Wait for it....

Since the Dorothy Hammel option didn't go too far, I present you with John Mansfeld, and Agnes his Wyfe for your kind consideration as to influence of the subject's heritage.

That reminds me of a 4 x 8 Miccosuki sign along Tamiami Trail in the Big Cypress Preserve telling Bush to "Go Back to England." The sign is still there today. Sorry to get off subject.

I'm just jumping on the wagon with this ... I don't have a frontal image of it. I realize it's not identical, but certain features seem similar. Is it possible the figure in question is kneeling as opposed to having short legs?

SBB

Description: This carved stone figure (origin unknown- from Victorian era estate) appears to be a Maya carved stone figurine from the Classic period. Its exact origin is unknown. It is impossible to date without further tests. The figure appears kneeling and wears a headdress. The facial features and carving technique appear to be Mayan of the Classic or Toltec periods. Wear and style suggest the piece could be Pre-Columbian but it is priced and sold as a contemporary art piece.

I realize this one is different as well. The reason I show it is to point out that these "types" of ...

Seated/Kneeling/Short-legged ... "Pre Columbian Mayan"

... figurines are fairly common.

I will continue my search along these lines and see what else I can find.
