My house is surrounded with 15 plus acres of trees, one spot up close to the road, about a half an acre is cleared with one really old oak tree on it. The tree is so old its covered with moss and has limbs growing into other limbs, standing alone on top of a hill at night it looks like something from a horror movie. Since the weather here has been so bad I've been detecting around it lately, you wouldn't believe the stuff I'm finding and I've only done a fraction of the area. When I'm done I'll post a picture of the stuff I've found. But I don't care if your yard is large or small if your house is new or old, the dirt has been there forever, so keep at it I'm sure you'll find something, then go next door and talk to your neighbors about doing their yard. right now lots and lots of snow :'(

My parents next door neighbor found a Flying Eagle cent in his garden, about 10 feet from our yard...

I agree, that's a septic system cleanout. That will be a valuable find if the drains ever back up.

I found a little gold cross with 4 diamonds on it in my front yard, this whole neighborhood where i live used to me a old flour mill back in the 1800's. down the street from me on a lake there used to be a casino, from what i hear from the old timers it was a really rough place, gangsters and whores used to hang out there, was lots of fights,it burnt down sometime in the 1920's that the next area i will check out.

for neverfindnothin,
the new syrmna an daytona beach area, back in WW2 it was a army depot or motor pool,a doctor friend of mine had a geo survey done in his yard, they found railroad tracks buried down at about 20 feet,in some other yards the geo survey guy said they had found several buried army tanks, maybe the M-1.if i found something like that,i was spend weeks digging it up,haveing a old army tank sitting in your front yard is much better then some old cannon:) a great theft deterrent too!

Found the slide to an 9mm automatic pistol in my Front yard 10 feet from the front door LOL

I believe it is a water shut off to your house, I have one in my front yard just like it. the top comes off and city workers insert a special rod (tool) down into the pipe and there is a valve at the bottom that the rod fits into that with this tool can turn on or off the water.

I live in the country on a few acres. I've not found anything of value yet. So far I've found a full set of horse shoes, bridle and bit pieces, lots of cans (must've been some pretty trashy people), dog tags, matchbox cars, broken farm machinery pieces, and a solid steel section of pipe that I just knew was gonna be the mother load. The hits are getting fewer and fewer now so I feel like I'm making some progress.

I don't think it is the water shut off...Really looks like sewer clean out.
You could always open it..you would then know for sure ;D

I found my "mystery stone" in my backyard in Bayside, Queens (NYC) years ago.

i don't know if i'll ever get to md it because a) i dont have a detector yet lol and b) my parents just sold the place.? ?prohibitive, yes. . . oh and c) they sold it to people who don't really speak english.?

eh... there's plenty of dirt to go round tho so i'm looking forward to getting my md act together nonetheless.

see ya!

I will agree that is a sanitary cleanout plug. It should be a 4" cast iron hub with the plug, between the plug and the hub part, there should probably be lead to seal it.
I would draw a quick sketch to locate it in relation to your house.

Water caps that go down to the valve at the main usually are not threaded because they would not be able to open it when the threads corrode. Water caps just sit down inside of a hub and can be removed easily by a screwdriver, usually.

ok here it is ...something for the house, cesspool? water pipe? i dunno thats all i dug sorry if this is something common i just dont know what it is

That looks and auful lot like an automatic water sprinkler system head to me, I've dug in the ground in football fields and seen very similar
things, they read real low, on a numbers discrim scale and the pipe I asume is pvc which is plastic, hense you don't get a signal
for the pipe.
I just cover it back up and remember where they are, usually they give a pretty big return signal so you should be able to determine
that these are what you are digging.
Gas pipe would be just a straight copper tube.

The object in your yard is a pressure regulator most likely for the water. The round part with the flats on top for attaching a wrench is the diaphram of the regulator. Don't try to unscrew to top unless you haven't had a bath in a day or two! Keep up the good work with the detecting, just when you think the back yard has nothing but keys is when you will find your first coin!

Good Luck!

well I'll take that question literally - in my own backyard that I grew up playing in etc. found silver dimes (Merc's, Roosie's), wheaties, and lead soldiers we made as kids in the 60's. Talk about going back in time... *L*

nope property was built in '58 - nothing that old. But one street over where the old school teacher lived in an old colonial farm house, I found a 1865 IH sitting on top of ground after they bulldozed to build townhouses. In the general area, you can find stuff dating back to 1700's. It's really tough to live with that... ;D
