As with his disclaimer statement:
"I would say a word to those who may take an interest in them..It is,to devote only such time as can be spared from your legitmate bussinessto the task, and if you can spare no time, let the matter alone".
Could our writer be saying,"Hey,its just a story,no real treasure,so don't waste your time trying to find it".

The author was referring to the CIPHERS! They are a RUSE, anyway... DUH!
Gotta read the HART PAPERS, which DOES indicate a treasure, between Montvale & Peaks of Otter; PROBABLY congruence with www.peterv.com/confed_treasure.htm PV was PRESIDENT of Bedford City/County (VA) Historical Society... AND! "PRIVY" to local documents, family legends/lores, etc... AND! It was his LAST book on the Beale Treasure; even as a novel... it is FACTION; FICTION based on FACTS... LOTS of factural info; READ IT! Rugerman is REALLY the RAGLAND family PAPERS; MAY be "connected" to Lynchburg Family Trust in Lynchburg, Va. I am looking into this, NOW!

We've been down this road before, a few times, but since you asked to hear it again, in my august opinion, I think it was meant to "entice" anyone who may have still held knowledge of past affairs and possibly that badly needed, seeming insignificant, yet critical, "unintelligible piece of paper"...
The BEALE PAPERS were published in 1885,but it seems that no one was enticed until 1897 when Hazelwood and the Hart brothers bought into the story and gave it a new life.

Could it be because in 1885,the buyers of the Beale Papers knew it was just a dime novel treasure story?

Hart Bros were TREASURE HUNTERS for a Treasure that N. Hazlewood (ex-CSA Sgt) indicated was buried on/near his property (Montvale, Va. area); it was Clayton Hart that got "involved' in "copying" sheets of paper with FIGURES! STRANGE word to use for NUMBERS... C. Hart made some "changes" in copied FIGURES/NUMBERS. HA!

Their treasure hunt was guided by a subject who was mesmerized and expanded the Beale story. Not the most reliable source, but it futhered the life of the story, and probably began the never ending quest for the Beale treasure.
If the Hart brothers didn't get involved in this treasure hunt, would the Beale treasure still be talked about and sought to this day?

Good observation, and I think you are correct in the sense that the author is further reducing his trageted audience, perhaps as if to say, "if you know nothing about this affair then don't waste your time, or mine." Again, I think there is design and purpose in his wording, "leave the matter alone". Odd that an author, especially one intending to see profits, would make a statement or issue a warning that could cost him a fair share of potential sales. Maybe the question in regards to this statement should be; "Who could afford to spare the time from their legitimate businesses?"

Was there any search activity for the Beale treasure when it was published in 1885 or up until 1897 when the Hart's entered onto the scene?

I think, perhaps, part of this goes right back to the question of, "How many copies of the pamphlet were actually sold?" And this is a subject worth exploring a bit, the notion that the sale of a future publication was so heavily advertised on the local level and, from all appearances, never really pursued in the marketplace after expending so much cost and effort.

1885, "guided subject" was part of the TREND of Spiritualism; MAYBE, they were guided by TJB... BOO! For REAL, tho... the SPIRIT of TJB HAS been sighted at the OLD Locust Level home of Pachal Buford, near the OLD Buford Inn/Tavern... written in a GREAT book by a lady in Vinton, Va. NEAR Montvale, Va. and based on family stories.

The Hart's "guided subject" put forth a great tale, embellished from the story in the Beale pamphlet, but not a mention of a French connection.

We have a tendency to look for why things might/will fit into the scheme of things,.....but we're seldom so inclined to look at why they may not fit into the scheme of things. We've all done it and sometimes still do it.

You have mentioned many times there was a French connection in Richmond in 1862,trying to buy land in Bedford county. Can you or will you name names?

Already have, a couple of times. But here is the general info again. (there is also an old newspaper article that carried this first story) regarding the two representatives of the Bonaparte family touring the area in search of specific/select property for their client. Also, throughout this period representatives for Napoleon III were frequently in Richmond. When I get time I'll see if I can locate that old article again and I'll post a link to it here. If memory serves me correctly it was titled something like; Royalty Coming to Richmond, but that may not be exactly right? I believe that same article even singles out Jerome.

It's all pretty interesting when you look at the entire period 1816 - 1864 because the Bonapartes were frequently in and out of of Richmond and the surrounding region. Yet to this day, we've still not discovered exactly what/who it was that kept drawing them into the area? Joseph Bonaparte even penned a very suspect letter to James Monroe from this same city, a letter to which James Monroe replies in utter denial of having made any such payments for services rendered to Joseph and other high ranking French officials. Considering the names mentioned in the Monroe reply one can only assume that these alleged payments went all the way back to the Louisiana Purchase. This letter is dated 1829, I believe. Ironically, from the Laffite memoirs we learn that both Brothers were also in this same city at the same time for the period of one year addressing business affairs. Throughout all of this it seems Richmond held some great importance but we've still not been able to isolate just exactly what that was. Why Richmond throughout the years? Don't know. :dontknow:

The Lafitte Bros were in BIG trouble; Chief Justice John Marshal lived in Richmond, Va. Vice-Prez Aaron (under TJ, Prez) was "undegoing trial" for conspiring to create an EMPIRE that HE could rule, after Prez TJ made the Louisiana Purchase & sent Louis & Clark on their Expedition (Corps of Discovery... they used CIPHERS in reports). Pierre was the MAIN "contact" for the Lafite Bros... getting out & about; Jean stayed MOSTLY in New Orleans, later... Texas. THAT was the beginning of the KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE "slave empire" concept; it ALL goes back into the "Cloudy MISTS of time". Even TJ & JM used CIPHERS with each other... that is WHY you can't find anything; it is ALL in CIPHERS. BTW, AB was found, NOT GUILTY... died "broke" in NYC, I think. "Google" Thomas Jefferson-Aaron Burr "Conflict".

From around 1816 to at least 1864 it seems as though the Bonapartes had constant presence in & out Richmond, but for the life of me I can't dial in on why Richmond? I can speculate, but I can't pin it down. :dontknow:

PROBABLY "connected" to the FRENCH HUGUENOTS Colony/Settlement near Richmond, Va. in Midlothian... "google" French Huguenots Colony, Midlothian, Va. 1816-1864.

All I know is that it appears there was something in Richmond that a lot of these people were connected to in some way. Quite often when you find one of them there you'll trace others to Richmond at the same time, regardless of the distance having to be traveled. "Why did they need to be there?" That is the looming question at this time. :dontknow:

1) Why did Joseph Bonaparte write his letters to Monroe from Richmond at the same time the Laffite's were there?
2) During this same period why did the Laffite's spend nearly a full year there and what important business were they tending to?
3) Why did our unknown author have to return to Richmond to tend to important business affairs?
4) Why did the Laffites and J. Bonaparte frequent Richmond throughout the period?
5) Why was Jerome Bonaparte in Richmond in the 60's looking to by select pieces of property?
6) Why did Neploean III have representives in Richmond at the same time Jerome was looking to buy property?
7) Why was Lallemand and others in Richmond and the surrounding region?
And the list goes on and on.

In 1817 the Americans advance into Florida, Monroe sighting a secret resolution that was passed in 1811 permitting to resort to such action. In his address to congress/senate in regard to the matter he also singles out "the banditi at Galveston Island" as representing the same threat as though of Amelia Island. Why did he address the situation at Amelia Island with military force but decline to do so at Galveston Island? In both locations this banditi had presented written proclamation to the US of the newly formed governments they had established, the very substance/threat the 1811 resolution served to prevent which was later again echoed in the Monroe Doctrine. Why was Laffite allowed to remain in Galveston Island until after the Adam's Onis Treaty had been "ratified". And a few years later we're all back in Richmond again, penning letters to James Monroe regarding payments for services rendered. Richmond is the key to unlocking the Beale mystery.
