Want to ge at Whites MX5

I run the threshold at a barely audible hum with a good pair of headphones. That is usually at 7-8. You can actually get a change in threshold on very deep targets that are not strong enough to give a target response. You can test this with buried objects or even targets in top of the ground by raising coil while sweeping back and forth. At a certain height you will only hear a raise in the background threshold without a toned response.

Helllo,
almost got it, i keep threshold level aroun 5/6 with decent headphones, as Rob said it will null out on disc'd items and the background noise raises on deep targets that are not strong enough to trigger a beep like you said Fletch.
However often i am unable to understand the difference from ground change and a real deep target, you know any trick?

About sens and balance,
to keep a contant steady background hum at bearable level i have to keep the sensitivity low 6/7 on 10, by raising the sensitivity the hum become unstable and intermittent and it is very hard to understand and accept at least for me.
At maximum sens the hum become stable only around lvl 25/28 which is way too loud and therefore not usable.

What's better then, keep the sensitivity at maximum level and tresh at 0 or lower sens and have an audible hum? I noticed that in air test there is much difference in depth between sens 7 and 9/10.

Btw i found the eclipse 6x10 coil to be excellent, it does produces less falsing compared to the original concentric coil, i'm loving it.

Thanks

I never go above 7 to 8 on the sensitivity. It is better to run a sens that keeps everything smooth and stable than cranking it wide open where you get a lot of falsing.

Ok thanks, i can push the sens up to 9 without false signals, only the treshold get unstable.
So i'm wondering if is better get that inch or two by maxing the sens (and tresh to 0) or get them from the treshold with lower sens.
I don't know if you can understand what i mean, I may be wrong.

Only run as much sensitivity as you need. Lowering the sense a bit will still get you depth without all the chatter and your VDI's will be much more accurate. More isn't always better on the sensitivity. I think the problem your having is more due to chatter than the threshold hum not being a smooth low tone.

I'm still experimenting with mine, my threshold doesnt get fairly stable til abt 20. Lay a coin on the ground without anything around, raise your coil and monitor your threshold level making adjustments and see at what level you get a decisive rise in the hum.

Hi,
..bad luck with my MX5, i had a conversation with a lady named Margaret from White's and after some testing we found out that the machine was defective, that's the reason why i could not set the treshold correctly.
I sent them some audio files and they confirmed the problem, i also had problems with tone ID, VID's extremely unstable, and many noises of various kind.

Since it was still in warranty they said me to send the machine for repair/replace but i preferred to return the detector to the seller and get the money back.
The detecor is filled with good features, built to last, very good customer support but i am not going to get another MX5 just because i was too unlucky with it :sadsmiley:

I decided to give a try to the Turkish detectors, i get a new Makro Racer next week.

Too bad, i was so excited to own a White's detector.

Want to ge at White's MX5

Sounds like you really don't want to own a Whites TBH. They were offering repair or replacement on a machine you bought used at no cost other than shipping, which you will probably have to pay anyway to return to the person you bought it from? Their service and customer support has been second to none in my experience. Sorry to hear about you giving up on Whites because of a defective used machine. Good luck with the Racer.

Hi Fletch,
well.. i had to send the machine back in UK and the shipment cost me 57 euros and have to wait to get it back repaired/replaced.. i was really pissed off.
The detector have been bought used (but under warranty up to 20 months)
I used Paypal so i was elegible for a full refund, i did that and got it in one day.
Now i am looking to buy a coinmaster GT as backup machine :)

Well that's understandable I suppose. Sorry you never got to use a properly functioning MX-5 since it is a really fun and very capable machine.

Yeah, too bad i had to return it. It took me some time to decide what to buy and there were two winners first th mx-5 and racer second position.
I give a try to the Racer now and if i don't like i get a second hand vx3.

I would recommend the new Whites Treasure Pro over the Conimaster GT. The display is better and it uses the same coils as the Coinmaster/Prizm series. It's a really nice machine for the money and now that I have the NEL Sharpshooter coil has really become a great machine to use. I get good depth and the separation capabilities of the Sharpshooter coil is really nice in trashier areas.

Any one have the MX5 with trac lock upgrade And how can you tell if it has the upgrade ?

Hi, i just had a conversation with a local shop.
They are official Fisher resellers and when i told them that i want to buy an MX5 they told me to avoid all white's machines unless i have already tried a particoular one and i LIKED it.

The guy said me that these low budget white's got lot of problems with mineralized soil, almost impossible to use.

I doubt that white's would ever sell a machine with these problems, my thought is that they want to push and sell only Fisher.

Fletch, you noticed any problem like that with your machine?

thanks

I don't think the dealer's advice is accurate. I have used many models of White's machines because, typically, they give me excellent performance in the very mineralized soils of Oregon. I have been most happy with their stability and ability to pull the goods out of the ground. I use an MX5 and do not believe its performance suffers because of mineralization. I will say, however, I am not perfectly happy with the stock coils White's chooses to put on their detectors. I typically change to a smaller coil. I have been running my MXT and MX5 with a 4X6 DD and the Detech 8X6 with success. Changing the coil has made a significant improvement in performance.

I just heard from Whites. The MX5 does not have a separate Lock Track function. Tracking is locked when you enter PP Mode, but that's it.

I have never had any problem with the tracking not being lockable. I compared the MXT pro to the MX-5 and liked the MX-5 better in every hunting situation whether it but relic hunting in 2 tone or coin shooting in 8 tone. The standby mode, audio, backlight, depth and overall huntability of the MX-5 was better IMO.
