Want to buy first Detector $550 or less

You'll get all kinds of suggestions on this one.

You didn't mention what type of hunting you plan on doing so I'll suggest a great general purpose machine.

Since this is your first detector and you have a budget of $550, I'd recommend one of the Fisher detectors in that price range.

Fisher's are great detectors. They have excellent depth, are reliable, stable, and best of all, they're very easy to opporate.

I'm a minelab person all the way. However, they cost more than you have to spend. My second choice would be Fisher.

Thanks for the info.

I mostly want one for Coins, and maybe rings I stumble upon.
and for the beach, but that is just for vacation puroses only so thats not important.

Are the ACE 250 any decent, or go with the Fisher,
Your opinions count, because I going to order one.
And thought To ask before I bought something, and should have bought something else.

The Ace 250 has a great reputation but it's a $200 detector and can't compare with Fishers in the $500 range.

Check out the Fisher models offered by KellyCo online.

The Fisher 1270 is one nice detector and sells for $559.95.

Fisher detectors can be used by beginners but they also have the technological capabilities for the more advanced.

You'll never go wrong with Fisher. If you could try out other brands of similar price at your local park, you'd buy the Fisher. For the price there's really no comparison, in my opinion.

I use a fisher ,but for coins and a 550 price range you need to take a look at the Garrett 1350. It has all the bells and whistels as the more pricey detectors
I've been thinking of getting one.
It runs about 550 from Kellyco and Garrett is a darn good machine.

Good luck with what you get.

? ? ?Well I'm glad the Whites MXT is just out of your price range. There's enough of them out there already picking up what others have left behind. ;D

I bought a very low hour cz5 off the for sale portion section of this web sight and got it for $350.00 when I opened the box I thought it was new. I am very happy with the performance and I loved the price.Good luck.

The Whites Prizm IV or V would be an excellent choice. Another good one would be Minelabs Musketeer Advantage $ 339.00 I have one and it's easy and fun to use and has great depth. HH

Down to the following

Ace 250 (anyone comment on this on from using it?)
Prizm IV
Classic ID 5 (anyone here own this one?)

i had a classic id it worked very well, found a buffalo nickel at nine inches, next to the chain link fence in the back yard. they work great in trashy areas, the classic 5 is the same unit but operates on the new prizm frequency, they respond faster than the prizms do, but then the prizms give a little more info and have variable tone id. one thing the classics can be modified for more depth and added externall ground ballance and threshold adj. by Mr. Bill of surfscanners for $85 dont know if hes doing the new 4s & 5s though. for $550 there are a lot of good detectors out there, then if you bought used, you could get a minelab! you cant go wrong with your choices, just read and ask questions and good luck on your decision

Ok Countrykid,

I would say to follow Tow's advice.

Find a store if you can nearby and take some of these different models for a test drive so to speak.

All the machines that have been mentioned so far are good machines. Your not going to get a definative answer on which "ONE" is the best. Alot of this depends on personal preference, your technical savy, your ability to learn quickly and pick things up quickly, and so on.

Tow's advice to try them out would be the best advice I think you've received so far. Don't get me wrong, the other advice you've received so far is valuable as well in terms of each specific make and model.

If I were to offer you another bit of advice,....and I will :), get the most machine you can for your money. What I mean by that is to get the best capable machine you can. You'll grow into it and the resale value will be better for you if you decide to step back out of detecting. If there is one thing I've learned about detecting, it's that you'll be wishing you had this feature, or that feature about 5 mins after you start using the machine you purchased! :-\ :-[

Good luck.

Don't overlook Whites IDX Pro. It's built using Whites Classic series technology. In my opinion a work horse in the industry. Have owned a Classic III for over fifteen years. I researched long and hard and the IDX Pro was my first choice. But after I test drove the MXT I knew that was the one for me. I believe the IDX retails in your price range so you should be able to get it for less. And get a free pair of headphones too. Buy a second coil and they may throw in a pinpointer. Do a little horse trading.
Many different coils fit the IDX which is a plus. It does not have a depth indicator which was the one thing I didn't like about it. But my Classic III had no meter at all so I was ready to overlook that. Buy from a local dealer if at all possible. That way you can keep going back and asking questions. And if you have more than one dealer in your area find out which one will offer the better deal. Make sure each one knows that you are talking with other dealers.
The truth is that any of the "brand" name detectors are very good machines. Other peoples advice of trying before buying is the best thing to do.
