Detector(s) used
Nokta Legend, Garrett AT MAX
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I hunt mostly jewelry at parks. The composition of the ground is mostly limestone. The ground balance on my AT max usually runs about 94. I also hunt the beach in Corpus Christi and there is a lot of black sand.

Debating cashing out a bit of crypto and buying a new detector. I'm looking for a combo detector, wireless head set, and pointer. Looking in the $800-$1,200 range.

New Only - Under full manufacturers warranty.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Holy wowzers I am 15 mins into detecting an area I went over with a fine tooth comb with the at max sniper coil and I just found a ring and it was only an inch deep. I'm finding all kinds of stuff in an area I thought I had cleaned. I'll make a thread after I'm done for the day

I agree their unmasking sucks. I last purchased a Garrett Ace when they first came out, nothing was masked, but it could not even find a copper penny that I could see with my eyes. I sent it back to Garrett at my expense to be repaired, they returned in the same condition, to me it was a piece of junk, and I would never spend money on another Garrett. Just my opinion.
I was going to say, I have NEVER actually owned a Garrett, but I have seen a few people / friends who had one and they never seemed to do very well at all. Back when I was in Spain, some guy brought a Garrett to a Roman field we hunted, we ALWAYS got stuff their, but he couldn't get a signal, I got a good signal (coin) and called him over and his machine wouldn't detect it.. he then begged to use mine (Whites Eagle) 🤣
Also my NOW hunting partner used to have a Garrett and always seemed to have trouble with it, after hunting with me he sold it and got a Whites XLT. (which loved until he replaced it with his Minelab 800)
I personally won't buy one, even though it's one of the oldest and best known names in the business...
Some people swear by them... :dontknow:

The White's Golden Eagle was a really good machine.

I know I said Garrett Ace, but it was the Apex that would not find an eyeball find. Spend your money on the Legend, or a minelab product.
Yes, experience is the most important issue
The metal detectors of the Lorenz German company are also of good quality, but in my opinion, Minelab has a better performance

Just got the LG24 Coil today. Will give er a go tomorrow.

It just got done raining so the ground should be nice and conductive. Headed out to test the LG24 coil. Bringing the lucky treasure hat with me.

That LG24 coil on the Nokta Legend is a superior piece of matched equipment.

There is a place I know a soda can is buried about 6 inches deep. I held the coil about 2 feet above the ground and it was still hitting it. This thing can pick out the tiniest piece of clan slaw and I mean like a quarter inch from about 4 inches deep.

Glad I took the advice on the Legend.

5 years ago when I started detecting my first unit was a Nokta Simplex. I liked it so much that I got a Legend as soon as they came out. Repeating what has been stated many times in the responses to your post, the Legend with the LG24 coil is deadly. I have used mine in a variety of conditions, even diving, and it simply finds targets over and over. HH and good luck no matter which unit you decide to go with.

Super impressed with the headphones that allow me to answer and make calls. So sick of having to rip my glove off and dig my phone out when when needing to use the phone.
leave the phone home or in the truck

Also got the LG24 coil which comes Saturday, and I got the pro pack which basically has the Legend, wireless headphones, a 6 inch coil, extra battery, pointer, digger, finds pouch, carrying case, and baseI
I bought the LG 24 coil for my Legend the separation is excellent, and I use it often, but I know this might be odd to some, but the stock 11" coil stays on my machine most of the time unless I am working a really trashy park, but the beach when I can get there, fields woods all get the stock 11"

I've used the 11" coil too. My problem resides in the shoulder. After not much hunting that shoulder really begins to be painful. The 11" coil is a great coil for depth and for its size the separation is great too. But my shoulder will not allow much of that coil being used. The LG24 allows me to hunt longer and finds things deeper than I want to dig at times depending on the ground conditions.
It's no problem for the LG24 for me to punch 8 inches down. When things are wet I've seen it go deeper than that.

Funny not 2 mins ago I bought the LG35 coil on amazon. Going down to the coast next month for a metal detecting, fishing, and horseback riding on the beach extravaganza. Planning it now.

I'm curious to hear your opinion of the Legend so far in your area and conditions. Do you feel it is better in one category or another vs what you were using before?
Are you still running the stock/factory settings or have you played around a little bit?
One thing that seemed to help me and it was more personal than anything else was adjusting the tone break points and the tone pitch and volume of each tone break point. My ears are not what they used to be and all those years of loud music, loud engines, motorcycles and other things do pose a problem. It's been good for me to have something like the Legend where I have been able to totally customize to what my ears and brain understand it's telling me.

This may sound strange to you and others but something else I have done is to take various targets both good and bad and toss them on my floor at home in the dark..
Yes, there are nails, pipes, and other things under everyone's home. This has allowed me to further keep connected to the Legend when the weather was bad, when I got home too late to do anything, etc. You would be surprised how difficult it can be in the total dark to try and find that good target among a common house floor. It also helped me further tweak my settings that would allow unmasking. Yes, it's an air test. And no it is not in the ground but at the very least it helped me a lot to pre-tune the Legend. Sort of like priming the oil pump on a new engine build or getting your first initial timing settings.
I'm very particular about the cabling too. I learned early on that if the cable is moving around it will also give falses. So I've worked on that some too. And while it may be considered overkill and unnecessary I took some 3M Temflex and wrapped it around the cable where it meets the coil to add more protection to that very critical bend. It's working for me and I don't worry so much about using my detector around straggly grass and smaller bush things.

I also developed some wobble in the shaft. But took a look and found it to be a combo of what seems to not be enough pad material on the cam engagement surface and also the cam assembly itself not fitting very tightly on the shaft material. I removed the cams and built the area up a little where the cam plastic tang locks into the shaft itself. The tolerances were quite loose there but not anymore. Just nitpicking really on my part but this thing is the way I want it. No wobble, no play now.

I will give Whites one thing, their units back in the day were built very strong. I don't think anyone today has the tolerances they did nor the build quality at their peak. All I did was try to very cheaply and easily make tiny little improvements to the Legend shaft and securing mechanism to get close to that old Whites shaft system strength yet make it easily reversible/removeable back to factory with no permanent changes.
The Legend has been a heck of a unit for me. It may be my last detector. I surely don't plan on buying any others.

you have to use whatever you are comfortable with, being in pain is no fun I say if it lengthens your outings go for whatever makes you comfortable
