This was found in a Civil War Union camp near Kennesaw Battlefield, Georgia. I have seen a great many dug rings thru the years but never one like this. Appears to be made of bronze and has three suns interspaced with quatermoons and dots. Does this look faimaliar to anyone?

wow that cleaning really helped! I wouldnt give up on it just yet, doesnt look too modern unless you have really bad ground conditions there. Didnt omnicognic have a search bot on this site that could take a picture of something and find similar pics on the internet? What ever happened to omni, is he still around?
Hello Jake. It just doesnt look bronze or brass to us. It is not magnetic ferrous. It looks like cheap pot metal. Pot metal corrodes quickly. We really NEED to ID the metal! :)

Hello Michelle. Over 100 replies and over 3300 views and no metal ID? ??? ???
Come on! :o ;D ;D
We were led to believe it was bronze; but I dont think so. It just does not look it. :)

Try waving the ring under a detector with a good target id and see what it rings up as, or maybe soem specific gravity tests would do the trick? Also taking it to a jeweler might help as they could probably identify the metal as well as the design 8)

We dont need a pic to ID the metal.
To Test
File a notch in test piece, apply a drop of solution- watch for color reaction.
Brass--Dark Brown
Copper--Brown
Gold--None
Nickel--Blue
Lead--Yellow
Tin--Yellow
Silver(pure)--Bright Red
Silver .925--Dark Red
Silver .800--Brown
Silver .500--Green
Palladium--None

I used this Nitric Acid/Potassium Dichromate/Water solution to test a large piece of metal i found on Treasure Beach. It showed yellow, and turned out to be lead sheathing from an old ship. It worked good on silver too ( Dark Red). http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,24080.0.htm

That style has been used for a very long time you will find many similar ones all over the internet...I guess I would try to clean it, to see if you can find any marks on the inside and test the metal to see what it is....

Best,

Chagy.......
