Mornin' Sunshines . . .here's 2 pics of the corkscrew. This one is not the exact one I was thinking about; we must have sold it. This one is not as old as the other, but the construction is basically the same. The only difference is this one has 2 openings in the bell part, whereas the other one only had one opening like yours. :laughing7: Breezie

Thanks for the pic Breezie. It sure does look like a corkscrew. But whats the chances of him finding two of them at a colonial site?I would say the chances are pretty good if a tavern was built, then destroyed by a hurricane or whatever in that area. Being a Colonial site really is not that much of a factor since life goes on. I found a 1940's lipstick tube in the middle of a CW battlefield, and it was dug within 4 feet (same depth) as a 3-Ring Minie. :dontknow: Breezie

Btw as you can see the bell shaped part does not have to be strong but the center screw needs to be something stiff like steel. Agreed! :icon_thumleft:

Good morning Guy's Breezie,I will say I've been looking at some and they sure look alot alike. Here is a site.
Not sure how to make the URL shorter so I'll leave it out then. :icon_scratch:
I see they are believed to have come from musket exstruders.1630's
First known for bottles 1681 steelworm :icon_scratch:
First patended 1795
But I can not find one that was made of all lead like the two I have. The worm part of none are lead that I can find so I wonder if you all know of any?And What date would they be?
By the way Thanks For all your Help and pics.

The image cache url is so long its messing up the page. :) Post your link without the search please like this http://www.corkscrewnet.com/MacLeanWilliamsonStory.htm or use tinyurl.com.

My question to you again is

Is there any remaining iron in the center? Can you test with a magnet?
No,It will not stick to a magnet! It's lead.If you want I'll take the bent one and open it up to show you.

Just to clarify I realize the piece you nicked is lead even before you said it was. I was referring to the rust color remains on the top and bottom. I guess if any steel was there, its long gone.
Here is the bottom done the same thing.

I have a couple of ideas about the disk with the leaves. I know you said it was fragile, and would break, but do you think you could take a pair of pliers, and lightly remove part of the rust clob so we can see the shape of the iron part on the back. It's hard to tell what is rust and what is the actual backing. ;D Breezie

I can't believe I never saw this post.
Cool finds.
I found something Identical to your last photo which turned out to be an unknown button.
It's kind of Ironic they were dug just 2 hours from each other.

As I said it's to brittle and I not going to break it trying to see what's under it. Cause don't think there would be much anyway. It's just to stuck on.Maybe 4-H could post a pic of his back part if it's anybetter that could help.
But I did go back and find the post of when these two items were found might help :dontknow:
The corkscrew thing

Very good pics timekiller. :icon_thumright: It just looked to me like there is a hole through the center of the smashed one and they both look to be made up of several pieces. I dont mean to beat a dead horse or give you a hard time but there appeared to be remains of rust and it also appears smashed on the end. Anything ferrous could have long rusted away. Couldnt the steel screw tip have twisted and broke off leaving the lead twisted looking? If you feel that there is no way possible for a steel shaft to have at one time gone down through the center of this lead item, then of course, it cannot be a corkscrew with a lead screw .

Thats a great link timekiller... and looks like a match to the Williamson's. http://www.corkscrewnet.com/MacLeanWilliamsonStory.htm

seems small diameter to be a corkscrew.
also lead or (pewter?) corkscrew?
would you think they made a corkscrew for those medicine bottles that had corks....?
just a thought considering the diameter and the metal. :dontknow: :icon_scratch: :help:

It is small and can only assume that is what it would be used for. Opening is smaller then a beer cap!

Timekiller Are you saying that there is no way a steel wire could have gone down the center of your lead piece?

I have been getting tired of asking questions with no answer so I thought maybe you would see it easier.

I understand the conversation about the small bottles.
First off lets not get started with the shots now thought we were working through this like grown ups.And if you look back at your last question you will see it ask if it was a shaft.Otherwise I've answered all your other questions that I know of.Sorry I'm not sitting right ready to answer as soon as you type all the time.So again wire yes shaft no also you keep going back changing things you type so yes I'm keeping up.The end diameter is the size of penny so I would think small bottles myself.

I am definitely NOT trying to take shots. Im not only talking about the last question. You appear not to be reading my posts in its entirety. Of course I do not expect you to answer right away. . You have been very polite but Im not going to beg for information. I understand if you are busy with more important matters and cant read it all so that is why I highlighted parts. My apologies if my honesty offended you. I dont blame you if you are upset.

I am sorry for asking so many questions and I will try to not bother with this thread anymore.
Big C, you are taking me wrong or somthing :dontknow: But your help is greatly appreciated in my threads I was just wondering why you acted like you had to start type in black bold letters. I thought I was keeping up.But yes I can see how two people miles appart typing back and fourth might not get each other. And no need to be sorry You HAVE BEEN A BIG HELP YOU WERE THE ONE TO SAY BOTTLE OPENER FIRST! I will say I'm sorry to you though for not understanding you maybe.I do have problem with my reading some but what can you expect when you quit school in the 8th grade. ??? But I try my hardest to understand everything I can.Only since I came on to this site have I read so much. All the rest of my life has been the hard road and hands on learning the hard way but I managed to make it work.Might die young from it who knows but it was the path I took in life. No Hard Feelings on this End!
And Thank You For Your Help!
Take Care,
Pete.
