Things that I hunt for at garage sales / thrift stores

Thanks! Gold here I come. :)

I have sold 5 pendleton items recently. If you can find them cheap and in good condition with no moth holes, I highly recommend picking them up.

The shirts you want to keep an eye out pendletion shirts that have a shadow wool, loop collars, and flap pockets.

Pendleton coats can bring in some big bucks too. If I find any pendleton coats in good shape for under $20.00 I buy it.

I am considering writing a blog post about pendleton tags, and how to date them. If anyone thinks it would be worth while let me know, and I will work on it.

I understand now why pendleton products are so desireable, the quality is amazing. I have found shirts from the 40s that look like they were made yesterday, the only way you could tell how old it was, was from knowing the tag history.

Vintage barware is still a going strong. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130445131525#ht_770wt_910 These were one of my very first barware purchases. Of course my wife wanted them if they didn't sell lol.

I am going to have to start buying more.

My favorite thing about vintage cocktail glasses, is that you can find them for under a buck and if you have more than 2 you can probably sell them.

Oh that reminds me SEANO did you sell those glasses you posted?

I went to an estate sale yesterday, I picked up 5 WWII era CPO uniforms.

I want to say the rating badge is an aviation Boatswain's Mate, but I can't remember exactly, and I'm not going to go down stairs to risk waking the wife up.

CPO Dress blues
CPO 2 Dress KHAKI (They are suppose to be bringing these back into the navy, I hope they do, but don't want to have to buy another damn uniform LOL)
CPO 1 Marine uniform with navy rank - I was a little confused on why someone in the aviation community had a marine uniform. I'm sure someone here could answer that.

Wasnt there a lot of change going on in the navy , airforce , marines ,army fliers at that time frame .

Im sure there was whole lot of stuff going on back then. Marines started up their first MAW in 1941. My guess is that he was probably with one of those airwings.

I don't know a whole lot about the aviation side of the Navy. I know the first carrier I was on had a Marine airwing, but I don't remember seeing any navy guys working on the Marine planes. I don' t think the Marines would like that too much :)

Now its not uncommon to see navy guys in country wearing army uniforms. I saw it a lot while I was over there with ECM guys.

The army wanted us to wear ACUs while we were over there. That got shot down really quick. Army uniform standards and Navy spec ops uniform standards do not work together LOL.

I really need to keep an eye out for those "Pendleton" they are new to me. I've looked, but haven't found any yet. I had a lot of interest in the "Fred Perry" Track Jackets.

No luck on the glasses yet, two watchers though. On for Buy it now $19.99. If not sold by summer, they stay at our house for cocktails and conversation pieces. :)

Retired Army Reserve, but no help with the uniforms, sorry. Never seemed to master all the Navy terms. You should be able to move those uniforms pretty easily.

As for researching it really depends on what kind of glass it is. Depression glass I use replacments.com, suziemax.com, and depression glass / carnival glass books for pattern identification. Pyrex, I use pyrexlove.com.

Thanks Famous!!

Thanks to your suziemax.com link, I found the name "King's Crown" and checked Ebay sales. As luck would have it, I picked up the exact same item below at a moving sale in town a couple weeks ago. Its been sitting in front of our picture window since then. Wife initially thought it was a repo., but its very heavy (leaded) and exactly like the one below. Not bad for a $1 buy. :)
$32 for shipping, wow.

I'm pretty new at treasure hunting at thrift stores and garage sales. I've learned a lot by just reading this thread. Before this I would walk into a flea market only looking for the obvious. In two weeks I've made a 300 dollar profit on Ebay. I know it doesn't even touch Turtles, but I'm proud of myself. I find a lot of Pyrex cookware where I'm from. The other day I bought 3 Pyrex Vision skillets for 5 bucks, and on day 1 already have a 15.99 bid. Yesterday I sold a 17 lot cup set for 104.50, and bought those for 50 bucks. I found a Revere Ware copper tea kettle in the trash in mint condition, and I have 5 people watching in it. Before I moved to the country I lived in Broad Ripple Indiana. For you that have no clue where that is its where Butler University is. A few streets away its a place called Meridian Kessler and its a pretty UPSCALE neighborhood (Payton Manning). I would scrap a lot, and one time I found a tackle box with a bunch of old lures in it. I sold one lure for 37 dollars! I believe I ended up selling about 10 out of it from 5-37 bucks a piece. The only thing that scares me is buying "glass". Most glass doesn't have any marks. Any help?

Happy Hunting!

Best advise for glass is if your not sure what it is,leave it alone unless it is super cheap an you won't lose alot.. until you can id it just by looking at it.. which will take sometime to learn..it is very hard to do at first

Keep up the good work Nick. It kills me to thing about the stuff I must have walked by without a clue. But.... now I've gone to sales 1-2 hours after they've started (Not my preferred time) and still find great resale items. I smile when I think of all the people that pasted by these items and left them for me. :) Knowledge is key!

Congrats on the finds, I am glad this thread is helping people out. You have to start some where ya know? Honestly I have zero background in selling online, well thats not true I played a couple of video games online that have an actual economy, and I made gold hand over fist. I played these games for about 9 years, and decided to try doing it on ebay for real. I think it has helped me, but the real reason for all of my sales is Olivia11dancer, and research. :)

I knew nothing about anything when I started in July of last year. Now I am averaging 1.5k to 3k a month.

Another item to look out for.... Vintage woolrich clothing, I have sold every one I have found. If you can find them for under a dollar I would recommend getting them.

Vintage red and black hunting jackeds go anwhere from $60-150.

I have tried some selling on ebay, but am so stressed by accurately estimating the postage. Do you all use flat rate boxes or what?Any help on the postage aspect would be helpful! What kind of payment do you prefer? Paypal, or what?
Thanks!

I use flat rate boxes... By EBAY rules when you sign up the ONLY PAYMENT METHOD allowed by EBAY is PAYPAL

I only use flat rate boxes if an item is heavy, to maximize the flat rate prices.

13 oz or less I use first class mail.

Everything else I ship parcel post, with the option to expedite.

I usually end up with a carload of packages to send out ( Kind of like I have right now lol ) so I
print all of my postage at home, and just have the post office double check them when they go out.

Its easy, you get free or discounted tracking, and you don't have to wait for line. You can even have the post office come pick it up, but I can't do that because I have a full time job, and am not home when they drop off the mail.

I accept paypal or USPS certified check.

I have some more sales to tell you guys about, but I am busy with certifications at work.

If anyone is interested, I am going to start posting sales on my blog, it will be similar to the stuff we talk about here, but more detailed.

I could use some subscribers to help me feel like I'm not wasting my time. :)

How are you accepting checks? when it plainly states that PayPal is only form of payment allowed?

Ebay lets you accept checks. Also you can do a carrier pickup and put the packages on your porch. They will come gert them even if you are not home.

Thanks! Hey Turtle, where can I find your blog?

I have a question to the people who sell a lot on ebay. I almost reached my limit transfer to my bank account on paypal which is $500. Did anyone here get a paypal debit card? Or how do you get around it?

HH!

I didn't know there was a limit, I just transferred $500 to my bank last week. I guess if I tried $600 I would have been told.

I have had a paypal debit card for years. I only use it for business. (supplies and postage) I tell all the cashiers it is a credit card and that works. I do not remember the pin number. ;D
