My opinion? There is bad karma no matter which way you go.

No digging is allowed, and you can't get a permit, but you're going to dig a hole 18'-20' deep...you can not hide a hole that big.

You will get caught, and put in a nasty prison cell with very bad/violent
people for room mates.

Also, these people that want 50%..I'm guessing they are part of some criminal
group, and they won't be willing to negotiate. Don't pay them their 50% and they might take more than just money from you.

As my late father would say: "Son, you got yourself stuck between a rock and a hard spot".

The smart thing to do would be to tell the other people (that want 50%) that you've decided not to pursue this any further. Then turn around and walk away
from the whole deal, find a way to make money legally, and don't look back.

Did you make a deal before setting out on what the split is?
If you didn't you should have. And if you didn't you foolishly left yourself open.
The predicament you say you find yourself in is your own fault if you didn't make a pre deal. If you did make a deal that was more for you and less for them and now they are shifting the goal posts then they are in the wrong.

Dowsing rods are notoriously inaccurate. They detect mineralization like crazy, and if soil is bad it’s likely to be even worse. Volcanic soil. The chance of this being the correct location are slim. Did they do ground resistivity scan? Ground penetrating radar?

My opinion, stay out of it. Not worth it at 100% take, which is likely nothing. Your freedom is worth more than any amount of money. These people sound greedy. If you do find something I guess you hope they won’t blackmail you or secretly turn you in to the police if they think you took more than your share.
