the real use for plummets

Since we are on the subject of mysterious grooved artifacts ...
Does anybody have an ID or some help on this one.. I don't know what to call it.. it also looks like a bird to me. It's made of the same type shell that is used to make plummets where I am.

You know that I know nothing about shell. With that out of the way, that is an awesome piece! I honestly think it is a bird. The lines in the back aren't natural lines in the shell, are they? Cool find. We all ask what type of tool is this or that. Why does every artifact have to be a tool? All humans need leisure time. Time to relax body and mind. Why couldn't that just be a trinket or craft? Something for them to look at and enjoy, as we do with all of their stuff now. Gator, you are #1 when it comes to bringing cool stuff to the table. Different stuff! I'm glad to be of your acquaintance! Truly honored bro!! Thanks!

I just love what I do just like everyone here.. im honored to share my time with all of you. ... Even when we argue..lol.

Looks like it could be the spur on an atlatl?

Good eye! I've never seen 1 made of shell. That's a very good thought though....hmmmm.

Plummets around here are next to inexistant. I happened to find one in White County Indiana back in the early 90's. The only one I've ever heard of being found. It has no damage, but the only wear on the piece is at the very very bottom. As if it was suspended and it would come in to contact with another surface squarely each and every time at the very bottom. No other wear marks anywhere else except for the ring at the very top.

That's some good info and even better observation thank you. Sounds like it stayed verticle.

I will get some pictures. Plummets are cool artifacts for sure. Some more info...The piece was found on a campsite with fire rock. For some reason it was put in the fire pit.

Do you actually have any pics of the spurs? I have a sandstone type of item that I dont think that would show up in a pic here but it has a strange shape to it and has some strange markings on it. Kinda shaped in a L form. On the sides it shows dots incurved on both sides of it. This is not a natural design of the stone. Show them if you have them or start a new thread on them. Thanks, rock

@ GB it could be a tie on piece for a necklace. Nice find and we will just never know the purpose for all of the Artifacts we find. I still enjoy the mystery of it all though.
