the real use for plummets

i am sure some was use as a plum bob out in the 4 connor area,
out there thay made huge builds that line out with the sun and moon and other building miles away.

That makes sense to me a post and lunar structure. These structures would be used as a calendar. A calendar is an important part of life. It tells you when your crop should be planted and harvested. Also makes sense that they would spend time making the little tool responsible for lining the structure with the moon.

Well..almost all of the plummets in my area are found on archaic sites..well before farming...also they never farmed here. Their Structures Showed no signs Of the use Of a plumb bob as most of the dwellings were thatched chickee huts often utilizing bent over tree limbs. No evidence of right angles even on the larger communal structures.

Seems that would be done using a stick in the ground.."not kidding"

There have been many theories on what Plummets were used for including the Charmstone one. Other theories include Pendants, Bola Stones, Fishing Weights, and some even say they were actually used just like we use a Plumbob in building structures.

That is a perfect example of the lack of a real answer. Surely that little grooved thingy didn't do all that. If that's the case.. we may as well just call them ceremonial and write them off.

And that's another one that had been bandied around. lol

This artifact is just like a Cone or a Birdstone. We may never know what they were actually used for because no one really knows. It is all just speculations and that's probably as good as we will ever get.

Folks, Here's my two cents worth. These stones (plummets-charmstones) were hung outside by a piece of twine. Therefore if it was wet therefore it surely is raining. If it's moving back and forth therefore it must be windy. If it is dry therefore the sky is clear. And if there appeares to be ice or snow on the stone then therefore it is freezing out side. :laughing7:

Ooohhh..contrair. you said... we will never know.. I don't belive that. There has been and I'm sure will be some very amazingly preserved sites discovered here in Florida.

I hope so. I was just busting your chops!!

I know.. LOL.

Hung with a string, they point straight down. Hmmmmm.

I have a problem with their being used as a sinker. Anyone that has fished "Huck Finn" style knows that you can just tie a string around stone you WILL lose without putting a lot of work into making. Doesn't work for me.

Right also about charm stones. I've not read a single word on their being found in burials.

Whatever those are.. they're not plummets.

I think a variety of mysterious artifacts have been labeled as plummets for lack of a better name or use. That is what could keep us from ever knowing their real purpose. Look at the wide variety of shapes, sizes, and materials that we have listed as plummets. I think it is possible that all of the theories given could be correct.

gotta agree....are all these really the same thing?

There's no way they were fishing sinkers.

Fish were mainly trapped, speared, or netted. If weights were needed for nets they would be large soft rocks easily notched. Plummets show a large amount of work, which is not required for a fishing sinker.

These had to spin in some way, because of their symmetry.

The charm stone theory is funny, I have always been amused by learned men that can't figure out what something was used for, so it becomes "ceremonial".

I'm sure there were certain rituals preformed in prehistoric man's life, but mostly they were hunting, gathering, and trying to keep the wolf from the door...literally.

You don't think they needed sinkers for the light weight bone hooks??? The charm stone, I think of, would be like a cross necklace today. Just me.
