Under the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) in Britain, a Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) is a professional who works within the scheme to record and identify archaeological objects found by the public. FLOs act as a crucial link between metal detectorists, the general public, and archaeologists, facilitating the recording of finds and providing advice on their handling and preservation.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the FLO's role:
  • Identification and Recording:
FLOs are trained to identify and record archaeological finds, ensuring that valuable information about the object's history, function, and location is preserved.
  • Advice and Support:
They offer guidance to finders on issues like proper storage, conservation, and understanding the Treasure Act, which governs the reporting of certain finds.
  • Liaison and Outreach:
FLOs build strong relationships with local metal detecting societies and other groups, promoting public awareness of the PAS and encouraging participation in the recording of finds.
  • Data Management:
They contribute to the PAS database, which is a national repository of archaeological finds, allowing researchers to analyze the data and gain a broader understanding of the past.

In essence, the FLO serves as a bridge between the public's discoveries and the archaeological community, contributing to the preservation and understanding of Britain's heritage.
We need something like that here. IMO

Got out to the school I always metal detect. Found a lot of change and odds and ends. Best I did for the day was a weird looking silver ring that has diamond chips in it. Found a random 10 Euro cent and a 1953 wheat cent. Not such a bad day.
