Hi all,

Rook, nice avatar!

Is that a crow or a raven? Did you know that the crow has sixteen pinion bones in its wings and a raven has seventeen pinion bones. Or, is it the other way around? Anyways, the difference between a raven and a crow is a matter of a pinion.

:laughing7:

Raven,

Both the Raven and Crow are very intelligent (with exceptions). The Raven weights twice what the Crow does. Both have great memories and can be trained with exceptions :laughing7:. I like the Raven origin. Thanks for asking.

Charles II set the number of Ravens to be kept at the Tower of London as six, for reasons that aren’t completely clear. Since then, it’s been regarded as “a minimum of six” (against the legend that if the ravens ever disappear the Crown will fall and Britain with it) but has sometimes been more. Today it’s set as a requirement for six plus one spare. As that beefeater said, their lifting feathers are lightly trimmed on one wing in a way that unbalances their flight and limits them to short distances.

The Tower Ravens are treated as “enlistments” to the Crown (in the same way as soldiers) and can actually be dismissed for unsatisfactory conduct. In 1986, raven “George” lost his appointment to the Crown and was retired to a zoo in Wales for destroying the TV aerials of residents in the area. Two more were dismissed in 1996 for "conduct unbecoming of Tower residents."

There's also a “Raven’s Graveyard” in the South Moat of the Tower with markers for those that died in service.

Nicely played DS,.......

No, I haven’t heard from Beeps. Maybe a family intervention?

I guess she could throttle back on the madness,...... but then we would miss the real beeps.

Yes RC, we do that here too,.......

We make use of an air rifle for just such dismissals.

If I remember right you Brits call them "puff guns"

If you look closely, you can see a 350 Meters high TV tower!

Not a term I've ever heard used here. We call them what you call them.

In the late 1700s we had various models of fairly powerful "pump guns" with an air reservoir in the stock charged by hand-pumping and the Germans called this a "Windbüchse" (literally "wind rifle"). Popular for military sniper use instead of the musket. You could rattle off a magazine of 20 rounds in half a minute with little noise, no muzzle flash and no smoke to give away your position.
