Savvy, Lady WD. Pepper has a birthday in 2 days. What to get a ship mate that has everything.

This is one of the earliest complete examples of an armet, the characteristic headpiece worn in Italy by mounted soldiers from about 1410 to about 1510. It is stamped with the armorer's name, LIONARDO, and his mark, the letter L in a serrated circle.

Crossbow of Count Ulrich V of Württemberg (1413–1480)dated 1460
Wow.
That is a busy piece.
Missing components but still quite a glimpse.
Then there is the cosmetics/ decorative flair of incised ivory (?) ect.

The basics of a crossbow design are represented well.
The limbs being wrapped is interesting. Vs being backed (just the side towards user) with sinew or something.

The cordage and how it is ran allows flex. But stiff resistance too.
No dampeners as can be seen wiggling and absorbing some of the shock in the clip I'm adding below. But something has to give and flex somewhere while still allowing stored energy to have driven the string enough..

Cased Set of a Flintlock Rifle, a Pair of Pistols, and Accessoriesca. 1800
Crazy.

I looked over (see , I didn't touch it) a rifle a builder claimed to have a couple thousand hours into when he took a brief break from painstakingly adding silver wire inlays I'd been watching him work.

A fullstock also , and being the usual case in fine blackpowder fancy rifles , the barrel gave the wisp of a stock strength where so thin through it's barrel channel.

Then he showed me where he repaired the stock when someone had knocked it over without the barrel in it and the vibrations cracked it.....
