THE Random Chat Thread - AKA "The RCT" - No shirt or shoes required - Open 24 / 7

Well I had something yesterday that I never had before-oh wait I've tasted this before-somewhere :dontknow:
The mrs didn't want to try it-"Nope we're good"
I actually had a few pieces as it really tender and was very good.
Pig's tongue....:tongue3:
There was about 8 different thinly sliced cured meats.

Been a long time!
Boiled cow tongue was more common in my youth. Then skinned after boiling. Chilled , then sliced thin for munching.
Meat. As is most muscle. Good texture , without stuff throughout like gristle, tendon, connective tissue/fascia ect.

Holy cow....now my cousin is texting me franticly. He lives in New York and is into flea markets and bottle digging. He's texting me pics of a bottle dig. Nothing great in his privy....except a lot of sterling ware....like pounds not ounces. He dosent even own a detector but is digging up silverware, a tea pot, a couple platters and some big ladels !! All sorts of porcelain and China ware. There are multiple cellar holes and foundations on this old abandoned farm !! The owner says he can dig up the whole place !! They don't care !! The craziest thing is as he was digging there was a small cave in....there's tunnels....at least three !! He's got one opening found and dug, and a second stone opening in the ground. Hes absolutely going nuts....he says he probably has 15-20 pounds of silver ware and other silver. He says I have to get up there as soon as I can as he will be digging all spring and summer !! I got to say...it looks interesting !! Lots of holes in the ground leading somewhere ?? Wierd !! And a mega cache of silverware !!

Has Cuz hazard-ed a guess at the era of the silver? Or it's getting below ground time-frame?

The maternal German and eastern Euro side of my family would eat that and I couldn't leave the table until I finished mine when I was a kid. Spend many hours at that table refusing to eat that and other unconventional parts of the cow. Still don't.

Innards and such didn't use to phase me.
Till one day Mom had a beef heart in the pressure cooker and rough-housing kids in the basement threw a feather stuffed feather pillow in the burning fireplace.
I initially thought it was the beef heart that smelled so bad.
Even after getting it sorted out , my brain still didn't believe it I guess. (Not like I'd never been around a heart being cooked either.)
Kinda slowed me own on such rich food after. A little , is plenty.
Didn't trust mince meat pie after either. It looked suspiciously nasty due to such a name in my young opinion. l.o.l..

The song is sung in the persona of an impoverished fisherman off Long Island and the surrounding waters who, like many of his fellow fishermen, is finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet and keep ownership of his boat, a type known as a downeaster.

The fisherman sings about the depletion of the fish stocks ("I know there's fish out there, but where God only knows") and the environmental regulations ("Since they told me I can't sell no stripers") which make it hard for men like him to survive, especially with the conversion of his home island into an expensive summer colony for the affluent ("There ain't no Island left for Islanders like me"). The lyrics reference locations in the Outer Lands such as Block Island Sound, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Montauk, and Gardiners Bay.

While the song is about a fictional person, it decries the plight of the Long Island Baymen. Joel was always sympathetic to them, even getting arrested during a protest supporting the Baymen. At one point Joel had underwritten a plan by his young boat captain to use his boat (Alexa Ray, a 46' custom downeaster) as a commercial fishing and charter fishing operation. As the two developed the plan, it became increasingly clear that the challenges facing a small commercial operation were greater than he had imagined. The idea was scrapped. It was not long after that this song came together.

Alexa is the name of Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. The Alexa Ray was a Jarvis Newman 46' fiberglass hull custom finished by Lee S. Wilbur & Co. in Manset, Maine. The hull was based on the Maine lobster boats known as a "downeaster". Joel has had several other boats since the Alexa Ray, all based on similar hulls. The "Alexa" on which the song was based was a Shelter Island 36, custom built by Coecles Harbor Marine in New York using a BHM 36 hull. A later one, also built in Maine, is a "Patriot 36" called Argos.

Knowing multiple fishermen, and their families.. This song rings true, as does the spirit, as I worked with... and as.. a fisherman

I live on the Pacific. Mr Joel..."billy" is based on thee Atlantic.

Not to mention his talent and musicianship!

Had a small piece of heart as well-

It's funny what goes through/stuck in the young brain when growing up.
Now it was pork sausages-simple as that-would have to sit at the table for hours.
I got really good at hiding those things so I could get up to leave. I saw the same things in the backyard from the dog Freedy-and in my heart I just knew that Ma was cooking them up.
Never ate another one for 45 yrs once I left home for good.
Then again it's over 40 for a hotdog-just have to wonder why the mystery meats got that name.

He was so excited I forgot to ask. I guarantee he didn't sleep last night....he is fired up !!

Not only can I understand the trials and tribulations of a commercial fishing operation, but I'm often disgusted by the commercialization of my home islands. On top of that I used to work for Jimmy buffet. Jimmy is an avid boater and one of his best friends is Billy Joel. I got to meet and hang out with the both of them sometimes and was witness to many of Billy Joel's different boats. After he and christie brinkley divorced they would often come and visit the buffets at separate times on the same day. I like his music but the man himself is a bit of a strange dude....not nearly as practical and approachable as Jimmy was...but still a great honor to be able to be around those guys on a personal level !! Both men have had some incredible yachts. Billy used to come out to jimmys yacht at sag harbor....he always came in an aluminum landing craft !!

Bart you should know best that "Old Silver" is a gateway addiction to one's thinking process.:laughing7:
