Why is water wet ?

Why is ice cold? Why is boiling hot?

This was given to us as a science project when I was in grade school. I poured some water and stuck it in the freezer to make ice. I really didn't understand what I was supposed to be learning. I was standing at our electric stove boiling some water and crying over the fact that I didn't understand the point of this whole experiment. My mother, with her usual patience and gentleness, grabbed my arm and forced my hand on the burner and barked, " There. That's what hot is." I got it. Water is not wet, cold, or hot. It is the feeling that you get from water as it makes contact with your skin. It feels wet, cold, or hot in those different stages.

Speaking of growing up...

I recently purchased a Garrett detector carrying bag. So, yesterday, I packed it all up to take to my mom and dad's house, where I grew up. After the little toy gun I found of my brother's, they are kind of more into me metal detecting. The house, I may have told you, is 150+ years old. It supposedly was part of the Underground Railroad (yet to be verified, but I could believe it). It had been relocated from it's original site and that's when mom and dad bought it. So, whatever I find will most likely be all in the family type stuff. Well, don't you know, I got all unpacked and ready to detect, when I realized I forgot the pinpointer.

I tried with just the Max. Dug 3 holes and gave up.

Next on the list was to stomp through the field/woods behind their house. Dad told me that they found lots of arrow heads when the driveway was put in. I asked what was the property before the house was placed? Mom said it was a vegetable farm and the field/woods was always there as far as they knew. I'm thinking I should look for artifacts there. Mom said, " There won't be any trails left. There hasn't been any kids playing back there since you were a kid." No biggy. So I started off. I didn't find anything good. Just found evidence that there has been some "playing" going on. Lots of beer cans. I found a Mickey's malt liquor bottle (pre Rebus puzzle). Then, I collected all the baseballs and softballs that my 2 grandsons had hit back there and never recovered. Brought them back thinking I was going to make my grandsons happy. Nope. Hacked my dad off! He didn't want them because they about ruined his lawnmower already because they don't pick up the balls. So, in the trash they went.

I said my goodbyes and got out to the car and realized I lost my sunglasses. Quick search. No luck. One of those days where I took a loss hunting. Question though. If nothing was back there, why is this old brick there?

Sucks about forgetting the pinpointer. I am experienced in hunting without a pinpointer. :laughing7:

At a three day organized relic hunting event in Virginia, I found about 27-28 targets in the first day, but because I didn't have a pinpointer, I spent WAY too much time searching for small stuff instead of detecting. I spent half a freakin' hour looking for a musketball in a crater I dug in a farmfield! The next day, with a borrowed pinpointer, I dug 50+ targets, and took two minutes finding a musket ball, instead of half an hour. Granted, I didn't find too much CW stuff, but at least I wasn't wasting so much time.

I was struggling with electrical lines interfering too. After the second hole, I decided I was only going to dig if it was a loud target. Still nada. I really wanted to stay home and detect, but heard that inner voice telling me I should go see my parents (you'll hear that someday). So, I am going to hit the farm before the rain starts and then go to work.

Good morning peeps.

morning bart those are some neat finds especially that button

Thanks GB....never know what will pop up down here.

Good morning NSDQ, Duckshot, Rook, RR, GB, ARC, Bill, WD, Bart, and the rest of the crew!

WD sounds like you had one of those days, the kind that are supposed to be all fun, but doesn't live up to expectations.
And some times there's just no pleasing people. The brick is an interesting sign of what may be hiding there. A return trip with all the equipment may do well for you. And perhaps the pin pointer will give you heads up next time.

Morning WD, GB, RR, bart and Msbeepbeep

What's going on today rook......roofing ??

Not today bart. Storms nearly here. Yesterday I put the ole F75 LTD to work picking up nails and screws from the job. Got a double hand full. My contractor lacks a few pieces here and there. Tomorrow he'll finish.

Did you run Simon back to the Summer retreat cave with Tom?:laughing7:

Well I don't think you know what frozen is. :tongue3:

Go outside when it is five degrees below zero F. and touch something with your bare hands that is metal and has been sitting out there. I can guarantee it ain't wet. Don't touch anything too big to carry back inside with you. And for goodness sake don't touch it with both hands or you won't be able to turn the knob and get back inside! Gotta thaw that ice out, then it will be wet.

Thundering here today. Think I'll take a nap.

I remember aking photos of the blood moon during the Polar Vortex earier this year. It was -10, and I was outside at around 10:00. I'll never forget how cold it was, and how clear the sky was.

Cold like that put your camera in a plastic bag before you come back indoors AND you know it's COLD when dogs are stuck to hydrants!:laughing7:
