Hi MD'rs, I was detecting the beach today waiting for low tide to kick in. I noticed 3 other folks detecting in relatively the same area so I kinda circled around them and came into some neck deep water before I knew it they disappeared so I made my way back to where they were and ( Holy ship wrecks Batman ) I found an eye popping chain 28 inches long 18kt with a 18kt cross and emeralds. It is modern but the wife nicknamed it the Atrocha. 45.6 grams in weight. WOW!!! Best find of the year.

About time this got banner! Was showing this post to all my friends and family it is so good! :occasion14:

nice find, i about crapped my pants when i read Atocha and saw the picture.

Nice find. But your hunting etiquette is deplorable. Why must you go right to where 3 people are and do circles around them before you get settled in? I can't stand it. When some one on the beach does a b line for another hunter. Does a circle around them. People. I'm surprised more metal detectors aren't rendered useless on the spot. Nice find though. Nice find though. Really nice find.

The way I read his post was that they other people metal detecting had disappeared, as in they left. I don't see how you can make such judgmental comments on his detecting etiquette based on that. Re-read his original post, I think you might want to edit your post.

Keeping in mind that only four people in this world now for sure but that's not how I read that post. He was there detecting. Went out and around to avoid them and only came back when they were gone.

I couldn't agree more! Under normal circumstances I'd have hit banner all the way. I couldn't after the way it was found and then handled after it was found.
It was only obvious the three others were looking for that same piece. Moving in to where they were looking after they left was fine. Finding that chunk of gold and then posting on t-net before making an effort to find out what was going on was wrong in my book. Too late the to do the right thing then.
But..what is the right thing to do? Someone lost it and someone else found it. That's what we do, we find treasures others have lost?
Myself I would have tried to find out why those 3 others were there looking. Might not have ever seen them again and then I would have slept good. If I got answers and it led me to the one that lost it, I probably would have cried but, I would have slept good.
Bash me if you want, just how I feel....

I make an effort to reunite most stuff I find. In some cases the person will ask me for help and I would not mind one bit. Other times they will come to me days later with lots of details about their loss 50/50 chance I found it but if I did, and there's no disputing, it's theirs. In reality that only happened twice in all the years I've TH'D. 98% of the time it's impossible to track down the true owners of the booty as for the Atocha there's several things about it that only the true owners can attest to. No con jobs here. I've been in the game a long time. Thanks for your tips and concerns. Keep Diggin :)

Congrats on earning Banner with this "Atrochas" find.....

Hi Joeb1999, don't be mean, I have always followed a fellow detectorist after he or she leaves the area for this exact reason, no one can truly cover every square inch of area. I don't believe they were looking for this particular chain because they are regulars on this stretch of beach and would surly ask for help if needed. The area that I search is the shallows around waist deep I had no choice but to stay clear of them because I get a lot of feed back through my coil when I get too close to another detector. I feel it was a fair and square find and I would tell other MD'RS just because an area has been hunted there's always something they did not find. I wish you much success in your searches and hope you find the big one using my technic. Happy thoughts my friend.

Glad its up there. It is a real eye catcher up there. Its a flashy bling bling piece. It makes me want to go and hunt.

Nice find - sounds like you handled the search fine. If those guys were really searching for this specific item they would likely have spoken to you about it. As for feeling bad for the former owner - I like to think that any who walks around with a $2000 necklace has it insured or else it is just a trinket to them.

I'm late to the party on this one, but had to chime in. Man that is some gold! Makes you wonder if those other folks even had their machines turned on. Congrats on both the find and the banner!

That my friend is a once in a lifetime find!
