tell me im crazy ! im ordering an Explorer SE

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

The Explorer screens are stationary. And i have to agree that is the one thing that bothers me is not being able to see the screen.
Get the probe, it does not add that much weight..i never really noticed when i added them to mine.... the payback is well worth having it.........

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

Again, I have ordered the swing thing. It is supposed to really help out. This machine is heavy. I agree the probe is worth the investment!

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

weasel606 - yeah probably best to learn the machine and then when you do get the X-1 you'll really appreciate it. Direct sun on the screen makes it hard to read. Use your body to shade the sun out when you can and look at screen that way - esp. for good targets.

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

thanks teverly, mastereagle22 and Ocean7, yesterday was really my first serious hunt , i played with it in the yard a couple times but yesterday was really my first good test and i'll have to say the crosshairs screen is a help but i find the digital is what i like the best so far ;D i have a better handle on the numbers but have to carry a card i made up to help remember them, yesterdays hunt helped me figure out where all those numbers fall into place and i'm getting a better feel for this machine, i hunted in coin mode with the sens turned down to about 15 :) didnt want to drive myself crazy before i get the feel for it, i had fast and deep off with auto sens on, the place was kinda trashy so i played with the fast on in recovery alittle but left deep off, trying to figure out this fast and deep setting ;)

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

Good luck..fast setting helps the machine reset faster when you are hunting in trashy areas so you dont miss good targets right beside trash.
Deep setting helps make the small whisper signals a little louder.
On fast setting is when you here the carnival caliopoe noises and you loose a little accuracy on id.
glad to here you are not discouraged with your new machine.

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

I'm up for the challenge teverly ! got to play with the fast and deep settings , was concerned about losing accuracy with the id but i did like the faster recovery, it seemed alittle slow in the trashy areas ;)

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

i have started hunting in iron mask/ all metal in trashy areas and it seems to be working well. it is super noisey but you dont have to worry about the machine nulling out if something good is sitting next to iron. in order to do this though you really have to learn the sounds well. i run sounds in ferrous for this set up so iron sounds in as a low tone and gold and silver ring in higher. it takes a lot of practice before i would recommend trying it this way, but its something to think about after you become more familiar with the SE. ;)

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

thanks hollowpointred ! i just got back from hunting today and i remembered what what someone said about the ferrous tones , i never understood what a difference it would do but it hit me today while hunting that i could not get the hang of the tones the way they were and remembering what was said about changing to ferrous tones i finally understood and changed to ferrous and boy it made a difference to me , i can tell about what i'm hitting by just listening to the tones now ! more like what i have been used to ;) i have played with iron mask / all metal but i'm not that good with this thing yet but i will remember what your saying and thanks for the info ;)

Interesting points..who cares if it starts an argument...it seems to be the only way sometimes to discover the strengths and weaknesses of a detector! ;) The pinpointing issue would drive me crazy though...I pinpoint very quickly and recover and move on... :)

Takes me maybe 20-30 seconds to pinpoint a object using the X method in the manual. And it's almost 100% dead nuts in the center. When it's not correct it's my fault from not having the disc level when pinpointing. So I have to ask.... what pinpointing issue is there with the Explorer SE?

i agree, i havent had too much trouble pinpointing. i think the pinpointing issue has way more to do with the DD coil than it does with the SE. any DD coil is going to pinpoint differently than a concentric coil. once you have pinpointed with it a few times its a non issue.

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

my pinpointing is pretty good with the se also , at first i made it harder then it actually was but after about 30 mintues and digging some stuff i got it figured out ok

Look at rebelts post way up! That is what I was responding to... ;)

Buy a sunray pinpointer! I got this same advise back when I bought my explorer II and didnt listen. BELIEVE ME, GET THE PINPOINTER! You will save yourself hours of frustration. That brings us to the other issue, the dif between the DFX and the Explorer. The Explorer is HEAVY (you get used to it) and doesnt pinpoint well at shallow depth, not at all on deep targets, you learn to pinpoint using the signal from the target itself (though the SE is a little better than the older explorers). The explorer(s), IMO, will ID targets deeper most of the time. The DFX is better in trash (probably start an arguement here). Good luck.

This one... ;)

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

Your gonna love the Explorer! I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but you
can plant a test garden in your backyard. Bury various things, like a silver dime or two
at different depths, maybe a ring or two, you know, the normal stuff you would find detecting.
Mark each spot where you buried the stuff with a colored wooden or plastic golf tee.
Also, make a map of where the stuff is so you don't lose it. The longer your test garden
sets in the ground, the more realistic the signals become. Then you can take your machine over your
spots, and know what is in the ground, and what sounds your machine makes with each item.
It also helps when you start "tweaking" your machine to see how your tweaks are or are not
working. Oh yeah... make sure you bury a silver dime that's at an angle. You'll want to learn
the different sounds that a coin at an angle will make, because there are LOTS of them out
there that other people have passed up. Have fun learning your new machine!!

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

the test garden is a good idea and i have thought of that but i just havent got around to it yet , i have notice that alot of places where i hunt is very trashy ! and that big 10 inch coil picks up everything and makes it hard for me to pick out the good signal when trying to pinpoint so i think i see a smaller DD coil for it in my future ( say christmas maybe ) i think the smaller coil would be better for me in the parks around here, just wondering if the smaller coil will change the readings any :) maybe some of you who have the smaller coil can tell me ;)

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

I sold my Ex because it was too heavy. I now use an MXT and don't see any replacement in my future. However, I know that the Ex found deeper stuff than my MXT. Wish I had known about those swingy things. I added the DX1 probe to my MXT and the swingy harness, makes all the difference in the world! No you aren't crazy. Hey Weasel606 My number one coil is the 4x7, separates like crazy. I haven't noticed any difference in my readings.

Re: tell me i'm crazy ! i'm ordering an Explorer SE

thanks johnnycat , i see the smaller coil in my future for sure ;)
