I can't imagine why the handle area would be flaked the same way the knife/axe edge would be?
Looks to be 10-12 inches. Could have been a ceremonial piece.
I too would like to see more pic's, all angles.

My apologies. My hand from tip of the middle finger to the heel is 6". I assumed yours would be much larger.

Nice piece. I see a couple of interesting things on this blade that make good conversation. It looks like the blade broke and the maker resharpened the edges from the where the stone broke. That gives the piece an irregular shape. It makes was no since in discarding a piece so big after all that work so just resharpen it and make the best of it. Another area of interest is the top corner of the bit end. It is not rounded like the bottom corner is rounded. It has a sharp turn and was made that way on purpose. Symmetry is what makes a point or blade look nice and this piece does not have it. Why? Perhaps after the break, the maker decided he wanted something different and went with an eccentric look? Perhaps both corners were sharp and he broke one and had to resharpen it to a curve? The different corners on the wide end lead me to think that it may not be a knife blade. Close examination may give more clues as to how it was used and hafted. I like it.

If you hadn't told us SC, I would've guessed FL. The notching and shoulder look Newnanish to me, as do the stem/tang, although long even for that type. Land or water find? Is the material that color or stained? Looks like points I've found in the water with that tough, black staining. Odd artifact for sure, but one I'd be tickled to find.

Great debut post, and welcome to the forum. Thanks for indulging our questions and requests for more pictures.

One more thought for what it's worth: it has the look of half of a flint spatulate.

Thanks and it was near water but completely dry and solid color of stone. One thing is that there is no black flint in sc or at least in the upstate . What had me out there looking is my friend was boring holes for telephone poles and they pulled the auger up and he swears like 30 arrow heads and pieces of woven clay baskets fell off of it. When they were leaving for the day the land owner made them dig a whole and burry all they got. He said those belong to the Indians and thats where they will stay. Right after I found it I was caught and the same guy made me leave

It may be I know they have done reenactments there really a bummer

i have seen that happen before in NV...digging on mountain tops for Cell tower installations....The local tribe would come by and be on hand because what was being dug up were "offerings" and the tribe knew they were there.

may i also say "bravo" to the OP for not going off on us for suggesting this may not be actually native american....

I originally thought modern piece as well but hadn't seen one like it before but those pics that joshuaream posted look spot on ..... Almost identical.

Joshua beat me to it, but it sure looks one of the pieces from India like the ones above.

Look at the little end. You can see that the damage was repaired as much as possible but one side still doesn't look "great" like you would expect on a modern piece. One side good, other side - did the best he could. As for use.........?????

So it being not native American is it a handmade piece or is it out of a mold or something

If its real my guess would be a broken Cobbs blade that was rechipped to a tool.
