South Carolina sheriff refuses to lower flag in honor of Nelson Mandela

Sounds like a good Idea to me too.

Correct me if I am wrong here, Though I believe the flag at half mast is for honoring Americans. I don't believe we lowered the flag for Pope John Paul, or Mother Teresa, or Princess Di. I agree Nelson was a great force of freedom in his Country, I do not believe it is correct protocol to lower the US Flag.

I believe there is a provision for foreign dignitaries, But I think Mandelas embrace of terrorism disqualifies him (at least to me).

Guess the goof forgot Margaret Thatcher also. Real classy. That was real white of him

Kind of mind boggling why we cant have a single discussion without people making comments such as those quoted above...

Article states flag was lowered by GWB for Pope John Paul.

Obviously, that was different!

Remember - President Ronald Reagan vetoed the South African sanctions bill. He wanted to support the apartheid government.

Mandela was a socialist and terrorist, a member of and supporter of the ANC......

Nelson Mandela could not enter the United States without a special waiver until 2008? Up until that time, he was on a terrorist watch list.

There was a revolution going on in South Africa, and it was not blacks killing whites (that would come later). It was the ANC killing anyone who opposed them or anyone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, including over 20,000 blacks.

Thatcher was an effective leader and a great politician, but will not go down in history among the greats.

I know little about South Africa, other than don't go in the water! As i read this I get the impression that the blacks in South Africa were the oppressors and Mandela was a bad guy.

He was a terrorist. Gov offered him a deal a long time ago, renounce violence and the ANC and they would release him from prison, he would not renounce the ANC so he sat in prison....

Treasure Hunter:

Why was he a terrorist and not a revolutionary? There are countless Threads here about resisting an oppressive government by any means necessary. Is that not what he did?

Seems to me our own founding Fathers would have been rebels - if they'd lost the war.

OB, I guess revolutionary is determined by POV. To the English our forefathers defeated they were most certainly rebels. Today they would be branded terrorists.

Terrorist? Was he? The government began systemic oppression of black people. it had forced non whites from their farms and other properties. Blacks needed special government issued identifcation cards. These cards had to be with them at all times. ANY white person could stop any black person for no other reason than to ask for that card. The black person not having it was reason for imprisionment. Yet, the government put no such restrictions on white people. This was long before the ANC came along.

Yet those who rebelled against this? terrorist?

Native Floridian:

During the fracas the North called our Civil War "The Rebellion" or "The War of the Rebellion." The Confederates were "Rebs" and Jeff Davis was to be hung from a sour apple tree.

Ronald Reagan said the Contras were the "moral equivalent" of our Founding Fathers. Of course, he said the same thing about about the Taliban and we know how well that one worked out...

It does often depend on which side wins.

Good luck to all,
