I am studying paleontology. One thing the earth is full of is pesudo-fossils. They look a lot like fossils, but really are just natural phenomena. The way to know if you have found a true fossil is to know what true fossils really look like.
I think the same thing applies to signs on rock. Rock can erode in all kinds of fanciful ways, especially limestone in a fairly humid climate. To know the difference between erosion and a man made sign takes getting to know the real thing. Counterfeit money is obvious to those who really know real money.
If you don't know if something is a sign or not, start with "not". Then take photos from different angles and lighting and compare with many other known signs. Become your own expert. Become widely read. Consult with others, but take comments with grains of salt.
